# Bit if a difficult one but if anyone is mega experienced with…

_Publicado por Gaia 🌍 el 2024-05-03_

Bit if a difficult one but if anyone is mega experienced with neglected monstera, PLEASE let me know. I left this monstera at my mom’s house nearly two years ago and all that was done with it is watered and left to its own devices. I don’t really want to have to propagate if I can help it as I’m not experienced in this matter and I don’t want to kill it after it’s tried to fight for life 😭 over the last few years. It looks like I’ll probably have to and separate it in to three plants if I do. How would I go about this? I want to save it because it was my baby that I sadly left behind. ANY help at all will be appreciated.

I don’t think you can avoid propping it, but that’s much easier than it sounds! You can prop in water or sphagnum. I prefer moss (about $5 for a big pack at Lowe’s) but either will work. Cut the stems with a clean, sharp knife (or pruning shears) and put either in damp sphagnum moss or water.

If using moss, keep it damp. If water, switch out half the water every week or so. It’ll root. Once you have secondary roots (so a main root and then a branch coming off it) you can pot it up. The pot should be chosen to match the size of the roots, not the plant, so the pot might be pretty small. You can choose to do as many as you want in one pot; my preference is two.

Monstera are tough, and it’ll look way better even while it’s propping; don’t worry

The only thing that is stopping me cut it up and prop (other than being inexperienced and having nothing to prop in) is this little shoot coming out from what you’d assume to be dying off.

You can always put that shoot into the moss to prop as well! Make sure you include the node and bring some of the attached root with it if you can. And then when it’s time to plant up the larger stems you can pop it in the same pot

Right I’ve decided to chop and prop like you suggested. There was absolutely no saving the rest of the plant. I honestly don’t know how it survived. It looks like it was living off its own root rot 😭 I have some photos of what I’ve got if you wouldn’t mind giving me further advice on what to do next? Because I am CLUELESS with propagating. I’ve always avoided it.

I assume just clean and put in water with this little one?

Totally! It’s very easy to learn and then you can have as many monstera as you want

I had a monstera for a couple years before I started learning anything about plants and it was in rough shape when I finally started taking good care of it. I made plenty of mistakes along the way, but happily now have three healthy pots from the original and have given several more to friends.

Yeah I’d love to see this thrive as it once did 😞 that’s so lovely that yours is now being loved through multiple homes 🥰

Definitely repot it and give it sunlight and water

I’m afraid I’ve had to cut and prop it. The roots were terribly root bound and in a bad way 😞
