# Hey planters, I just bought a levoit smart humidifier for my room…

Hey planters, I just bought a levoit smart humidifier for my room since it runs dry (~35%). Though my plants are tolerating the low humidity and occasional misting, they're not thriving, so anything above that to me is a huge plus.

My humidity target is 55% (don't want to worry too much about mold) but I also want to be cautious about saving electricity and water, so I'm wondering if it's okay to turn it off completley when I'm asleep. Tested it yesterday and it reduced by ~12% overnight. Is this too much a drop and will my plants be stressed with this daily environmental change?

TL;DR: If my humidity fluxuates between 40-55% daily is that too big a change and will my plants get stressed?

Thanks!

I haven’t noticed big issues with my plants when humidity fluctuates. My plants seem to have more issues with changes in sunlight and water than when I mess with the humidity, even for long stretches. I will say that putting a plant under glass is a better way of producing consistent humidity for a plant than a humidifier. Cheaper too. I have both a humidifier in my bedroom and a mini-greenhouse and the humidity loving plants in the greenhouse seem to be much healthier than those in my bedroom. Though I will say all the plants are healthy overall. More humidity is always better than no humidity! Unless it’s a desert succulent of course 😉

Hold up let me grab my notebook... ✍🏻

Amazing advice, thank you!

I personally don’t think it’s too drastic of a fluctuation, but I guess it depends how fussy the species you have are. There’s a certain often-illegal plant which growers are VERY particular about constant humidity control. But I think in most house plant cases, there’s really no need to be that specific

I also have a smart humidifier and I like it a lot. I’m not an electricity-use wiz by any means, but my first thought was: “does it use more energy and water ramping back up to the daytime setting than it would if it was allowed to maintain all evening?” Because the beauty of the smart humidifiers is they don’t run if they don’t need to. But either way, I agree on not going higher than 55% in a home setting 👍

Okay perfect. Do you air out your house/room regularly or have had problems with mold? I've read that air circulation may decrease chance for mold growth. I have asthma so I'd rather not bring in any new allergens lol

Oh yeah. Big time. When my collection first started getting serious, I didn’t have a meter for humidity. I didn’t use a humidifier during the summer but I also didn’t use an AC. Turned out the high summer humidity and having a lot of pots of moist soil in one room was causing 80 to max % humidity in that room 😬 Plus the heat. I was gone for a long weekend and had closed the windows in case it rained. When I came back there was grey downy mold on a ton of porous surfaces all over the room. It was horrible

That was a bit of an extreme situation, but my top tips are having a hygrometer, running a fan, and keeping below 60%. Even though I maintain a much better max humidity now, I still keep daily ventilation. I know running a fan every day is not ideal, but it seems worth it to me. I have a very cheap low usage fan, nothing fancy. I open windows instead when weather permits

I just had a thought I can’t believe I didn’t think of before lol. I wonder if a small solar bank could power my fan during the day! That would be sweet

My home humidity levels are around 50% inside and 70% outside on average. It rained today so it’s 64% inside and 89% outside in Zone 9a subtropical zone. I have no issues with mold in the house. My doors are open constantly to let the dogs out. I only have a line of mold on the north wall of my house outside that gets no direct sunlight.

Oh wow. Maybe I'm worrying too much over the mold thing. Being cautious is still good ofc

I would not worry too much. You can smell that damp musty mold before you see it. In my house, it’s usually on the shower tile. Just pay attention, but, don’t stress over it.
