# My Baby Spider plant was found beneath a larger Spider plant. Baby…

_Posted by Zhoscia on 2025-02-06_

My Baby Spider plant was found beneath a larger Spider plant. Baby has a different root system. The little one doesn’t seem very solid and I think it needs moral support.
In the meantime should the longer leafs be trimmed? The tips are brown.
Thanks in advance for your expertise.

I would put the baby in water instead of a pot. The roots will grow faster and then you can transfer back to the pot. As for the tips, it’s up to you aesthetically, I always remove them.

Spider plants get brown tips from under or over watering. It could be over watered if the pot has no drainage or the drainage rate is too slow. Fungus gnats are a sign the soil is staying wet too long. The soil needs to completely dry out between watering since spider plants have thick fleshy roots that store moisture better than the typical plant. Water when the soil drys out and the leaves start to go limp a little.

Also, the soil needs lots of perlite or similar to increase drainage rate and decrease the chance of root rot.

I recommend removing the gravel off the soil of the smaller plant to let the soil dry out faster. This will prevent root rot. The plant is too small to dry out the soil by itself self. It needs evaporation to help. Gravel on top slows evaporation.

Both plants need more fertilizer. The green sections should be darker. 🍀🪴
