Is your soil draining properly and/ or retaining too much water? That’s usually a signal of too much moisture. Is it getting enough sun?

#### Cait2k3 svarede den 2024-05-26

It was directly under a humidifier plume and I think that was maybe the issue. Dumb I know. But I moved it four days ago and maybe this rot was still in progress

I have my jade’s in full sun (outside) and it’s the only way mine thrive. That’s not the case for everyone, just me. If their soil is not drying thoroughly with sunlight, root rot will be an issue. My advice is to get it into more sunlight.

#### Chrissy svarede den 2024-05-26

Also, jade plants don’t require high humidity.

Should I unpack her soul and investigate for root rot and cut those roots? They at rotten if brown and soft right? Mine is indoors and gets direct sun only part of the day

#### Chrissy svarede den 2024-05-26

That’s a tough one - try putting it in a place that can get as much sun as possible and see if that helps. If the soil isn’t drying up in a few days, investigate.

how often do you water)

#### Cait2k3 svarede den 2024-05-26

I wait til dry then give a bath and let it drip dry off before rehanging. I will make sure the bottom is completely dry with a soil meter before watering next time

#### plant addiction svarede den 2024-05-26

i’m certainly not an expert but it sounds good, next time you use the soil meter, if you have a wooden stick, put that in the bottom too and pull it out to see if it’s wet or damp, (soil will stick to the stick) just because i found out a while ago meters only work on some plants

If you are watering when the soil is dry then definitely overwatering. The jade plant (and other succulents) store water in their leaves. They use it from the oldest (lower) leaves first. You should water when you can bend the leaf some. It will suck up the water within a day and should sit in dry dirt until you see the lower leaves getting pliable again.

If you are comfortable, pulling it out, Jade are really hardy. I personally unpot most of my succulents every few months. I know that sounds crazy, I don’t expect everyone to do that! I really like having my hands in the dirt, so that is a therapeutic thing for me. 😊 It also allows me to keep an eye out for root rot (wet or dry) and allows me to know easily when a plant needs a new pot.

Anyway, I would personally suggest you pull it out to check the roots and stems. If it’s rotten, you have a better chance of saving it now vs. later. If it’s fine, just pot it back up, no harm done.

What kind of soil is it in? They can handle less light but they will thrive in more light. You will need a more draining soil the less light they have.

Also, remember to only water when the leaves are less firm. Not mushy like this, but more pliable. Depending on the soil, size of plant, light, and pot, that could be from twice a week to twice a month. The dirt should be dry between waterings. The water should be able to dry up within a day of watering. If not, then the plant didn’t need water or there’s an issue with the soil. Meaning the wrong kind of soil, or too much soil for that plant.

They only need a pot that the roots can reach the bottom. If the pot is too big, then the roots can’t suck up all the water, and that will also cause rot.

It is quite possible that this was just caused by the humidifier, but I wanted to make sure you knew about these things as well, so the issue would not be compounded. 😊

If you dump out the soil and it’s soaking wet, you could lay it out on a plate or tray to dry. Jade can be left out of a pot for weeks and be just fine. Once the soil is dry, if it’s well draining, then you can put the Jade back in the same pot and dirt.

If you feel like the dirt is not well draining, you could either mix in things like perlite, small rocks, orchid bark or switch to a cactus soil. I have not tried orchid bark, but I’ve been told it works in a similar way to pearlite.

If you see that the roots are much smaller than your pot, you could either repot it in another pot entirely, or put in a smaller pot with drainage and sit it back in this pot so you can hang it back up somewhere away from the humidifier. If you don’t need it to be in the same kind of pot because you’re moving it to a different location, terra-cotta is a great option for Jade or any other succulents because it allows the dirt to try out quickly.

Thank you for all of this helpful collated info about taking care of jade plant. Im going home right now to depot and check for root rot then I will repot with the same soil mixed up with perlite but u don’t know what ratio of perlite to potting soil to use? 20% perlite? What do you think? Thanks!!

#### Succulent❤️Mama svarede den 2024-05-26

Depends on how well draining it is already. Maybe 1/3? If you use a lot, it wants to float to the top which is annoying.

I’m going to try to prop some leaves by laying them in soil. Should I put Keiki paste on the tip of the leaf. If so, just a very thin layer, right?

#### Succulent❤️Mama svarede den 2024-05-26

I’ve never used keiki paste but have propagated a lot of succulents. Specifically, I have propagated a few varieties of Jade. The stem cuttings will root faster. You can grow them from leaves, but it will take a few months probably.

With all succulents, you just take the leaves and lay them flat on top of a tray of dirt. The plant will not send out roots until it knows it is safe to do so although some plant cuttings are more ambitious about putting out roots than others. Some leaves you could just leave on a shelf and they would grow roots and pups. Some need a little more encouragement.

What I have found that works for most of them is to lay it on a thin layer of dirt in a tray and mist that once every day or two. You want to spray it enough to let the plant sense moisture, but you also want it to be able to dry out within a few hours so you don’t cause any rot on those leaves.

The plants don’t want to put out roots until they know that they’re in an environment that they can access water. That applies more to plants that roots have rotted off of or to stem cuttings.

I don’t think of the spots on the Jade stem as nodes like Pothos plant, but there are basically nodes that the leaves grow out of and that’s where new leaves can grow out of if you were to take a stem cutting and stick it in dirt. The roots would come from the cut stem part though.

Any cuttings you take, you should let dry over, also known as callousing over, until the cut end is very dry. That could be a few hours for a leaf, or a whole day or two for a stem cutting.

You lay the leaves flat like this. Because the pup will come out to top and the roots will come out the bottom.
