# Hey, I recently got into plants, new to everything, they seem to be…

Hey, I recently got into plants, new to everything, they seem to be doing well so far but I have a few that are ready to be potted/repotted. I was wondering if there was any sort of cheat code all around soil mixture to use for indoor plants that receive no natural light and only use a grow light.

The soil mixture should depend on level of drainage and plant needs. Are you saying these plants receive no natural light at all?

Yes. My apartment gets shade but no real light

You’d be surprised how much indirect light a plant can get from a window even if it’s not facing the sun! Try and give em time in the natural light too! But again- soil comp depends on the plant itself. Any that require good drainage, you could mix an organic potting soil with perlite. But there’s no cheat code in my experience ;)

Agreed!! Totally depends on the plant. 🙂

Would the fertilizer also depend? Miracle grow has the indoor fertilizer and all purpose fertilizer but I see you can also buy like tropical plant, flowering plant, succulent fertilizer, and all that. Would an all purpose fertilizer be alright? It wouldn’t be detrimental to some plants?

Honestly just stay away from fertilizer for now, as you learn. Most plants are fine without it, and you are more likely to hurt a plant if using the wrong thing, than hurt it by not fertilizing. The only common plants I can think of that really get hungry for fertilizer are peace lilies and monstera deliciosa. But even those are fine without. Most soil comes with fertilizer built in too, so don’t fertilize anything repotted within the last six months.

What kinda of plants do you own? I Live in a new state with no full natural light \& i now use grow lights so You good with that my Plants are Still growing (came from Florida to upstate) And I have Plants like monstera’s, golden pothos, Alocasia’s, philodendrons… and a couple other and my soil is Foxfarm’s Ocean soil (it has A lot of Good nutrients inside the soil already!) with added Orchid bark and Extra perlite I added (comes with perlite inside it But i added some more) and some added slow Release fertilizer pellets! they Seem to Love this soil and my Mix inside so maybe try that! using distilled water also had Helped me plants here Like crazy… (tap water is so bad here Where i am… i am bery use to being able to Let my tap water sit out and be Safe for my planta… cant do that where i live now…it killed 3 of my very healthy plants🫠)

A few alocasia. Xanthosoma. My little Swiss is struggling after my cat decided it looked tasty.

I keep my Pothos and philos in the windows. Recently got a couple venus flytraps too though I know you can’t use fertilizers or minerals for those.

i would recommend using a pitcher filter and some aquarium water conditioner instead of distilled water, the cost of distilled racks up quite fast not to mention the amount of resources consumed by distilling and the plastic waste. tap water treated in this manner is even safe for sensitive plants like marantaceae (prayer plants).

also, the random capitalizations in your message make it quite hard to read 😅

you’ll need extra drainage if the plants aren’t in sun, i like to mix various grades of perlite, pumice, and fir bark or coco chips into my potting mix.
