# I typically premix a watering can of plant food using liquid food…

I typically premix a watering can of plant food using liquid food drops and use it throughout the week just to make sure the initial ratio is good from the get go. The nutrients aren’t evaporating in this time, though, are they? Should I be topping up the can with some extra drops after a few days?

Hey hey!

I think many bottles will tell you if you can premix. Usually, they instruct you not to because the effectiveness goes down once exposed to sunlight (someone correct me if I’m wrong here!) it’s not so much the evaporation but the effectiveness after sitting and exposed.

Thank you! The one I bought doesn’t specify, but I also store it under the sink, out of the light.

You should be good then :D I honestly did the same thing in the past and didn’t really notice that big of a difference

If anything I’d say to top off with more water because the water is what will evaporate, not the fertilizer, making it more concentrated than you might want

It's perfectly fine. N-P-K isn't going to deteriorate In a week. The only issue you might come to on, is if there's some bacteria (beneficial), and it'd bloom the water in that time. You might get a scum on top. I dont see it being harmful, just gross 😐

Yeah, I mix my fert in 2 gallon batches every couple weeks. No issues here
