My neighbors wife passed this past year and I’d love to help with some things in the yard that were hers ! I’m not even sure what to call these 😅 but, any ideas on how to care for them ?

Many people call them tub ponds or container ponds. They’re usually pretty self-sufficient until the end of the season. What are you hoping to help with them specifically?

Just care instructions, how to clean, do they need plant food anything of that sort . The wife did all of these things and I’ve never had one so 😅

Oh gotchya. Water lilies are considered heavy feeders if you want to get those nice blooms time and again. There’s a type of fertilizer usually called something like “root tabs” or “pond tabs” that are typically sold in garden centers with a pond section or pet stores with a koi section. The tab is put into whatever medium the water lily tuber is growing in. If you don’t want to go bobbing for tubers lol, aquarium sections usually also sell liquid fertilizer. This will treat the whole body of water however, which could encourage algae to grow. That makes it a secondary option in my book, but it is doable with a little extra monitoring

I typically only clean if I have an algae bloom or at the end of the season to put it away. I live in an area with long cold winters, so I can’t leave it out year round. I take the plants out according to their temperature tolerance, and drain the water before frost. I can give more tips on those steps if you live in a low garden hardiness zone too

Is there a water pump or fountain in there? Sometimes those have to be checked for blockages. And there aren’t fish, are there?

Omggg thank you so much !! That info helps a lot. There are no fish in there no, I also am located Northern California if that helps 😅 also no pump from what I can see ! I’m pretty sure they got left out there this last winter

My pleasure! Happy to put my lockdown hobby deep-dive knowledge to use 😂 And that’s awesome that you’re helping out your neighbor so much! Must be that southern hospitality I hear about. I’d love to have neighbor friends, but my closest neighbor well… let’s just say she and her adult son had an argument that led to shots fired 😬 Thankfully no one was hurt, but well… I think that incident speaks for itself. Maybe my next place will be next to a fellow plant lover 😌

Sounds like a sweet and simple setup, so that’s great! It’ll be wayyyy easier to care for with your mild winters. I haven’t tested the theory, but I’m pretty sure a tub pond would be a solid ice cube by Christmas here in New Hampshire 😭😂

And also easier without fish. They’re cute and all, but I had to move mine to an indoor aquarium from around September until May 🤪 I only did that 2020 and 2021 before I re-homed the fish and their aquarium. When it comes to my tropical plant and pond hobbies, I’m trying to live my best southern life in the wrong climate 🤣 My heart is here in NH, but the weather can be frustrating at best

Always, it’s a little tricky with Planta not having direct messaging, but if you have more questions at any point, try to come back to this post and reply to me. I’m always checking my Planta notifications, so if they do their part and notify me, I should see it and I’ll reply ☺️
