I stumbled across a tree that grow these nuts, fruit, or some kind of seed. Anyone know what it is?

Based on the appearance of the object in the image, it looks like the fruit or seed pod of a pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis). Pecan trees produce these green husks that eventually dry and split open, revealing the familiar edible pecan nut inside.

If this is from a pecan tree, the husk will harden and eventually fall off, leaving the pecan behind.

Pecans. There are several varieties.
