I got this plant at a plant swap last year. I was told it's a bamboo plant and just wanted to make sure it is and that it's ok to leave in water. Thanks

Thanks iz it ok to stay in water or should I pot it?

Depends on what you like. I like the water look but it won’t really grow in water unless you give it some nutrients. I think a small cute pot would look nice. As it gets taller, strip the leaves off for that bamboo look.
