# So this is Caz. He’s my office spider plant. My first ever plant…

_Posted by lunarlizard13 on 2026-07-10_

So this is Caz. He’s my office spider plant. My first ever plant really. He was originally sitting on a shelf by my desk which has no light other than the generic fluorescent office lights. He was very droopy and had lots of dead leaves at the bottom. I moved him to the window (south facing) on Friday last week. He seems much happier there but still lots of dead leaves. I water him about twice a week. Anyone have any suggestions for my little dude? I want to be a plant mom but I am pretty hopeless lol. I don’t want to fail little Caz.

Giving him more light was a good decision. The yellow leaves won’t come back to green. They will start to get brown and you can cut them off. Apparently while they are dying the plant is reabsorbing some nutrients. You might be overwatering? Does the pot have drainage? Check that the soil is dry about 2” down before watering again. Then water thoroughly until water is running out the bottom. Let that water drain before putting back in his spot

His soil is dry but not clumpy bone dry if that makes sense? I was thinking about doing some research on repotting him with some better soil and drainage actually. But I’ve read that spider plants like to be root bound so I wasn’t sure. And I don’t want to make a ton of changes too fast. I might give him the tiniest splash of water since I won’t be back till Monday. And then check the soil on Monday.

The soil loses nutrients over time. So a soil refresh might be in order if it’s been awhile. You can put him back in the same pot if he hasn’t outgrown that one. If it seems like there’s more roots than soil, go up just one pot size. Always water thoroughly when you repot

Also, it is easier to save an underwatered plant than an overwatered plant. Overwatering can lead to root rot. No roots = no plant

Definitely less water until there’s more green growth from the boosted light

Last silly question. But he is currently in a 6x6 pot…. I’m almost wondering if that’s too big….

The general rule for pot size is 1-2” larger than the root ball

Better light, water 1x per week max, add a little plant food to water every couple weeks. I think that you will see some improvement. If not, it might benefit from a repot to a smaller pot while it regains its health. Many will disagree with this but you can add a teaspoon of coffee grounds to the top of the soil to give it a boost—just one time before you water next.

I don’t disagree. My plants have coffee lol
