# It’s that time of year when I’m receiving a whole slew of repotting…

It’s that time of year when I’m receiving a whole slew of repotting tasks. Do y’all actually repot every year? I have some plants that I am genuinely nervous about repotting because they are thriving and I don’t want to throw off their amazing growth. What are y’alls thoughts?

I don’t repot annually.
Have to check the roots.
My sister had a Christmas cactus in the same pot for 15 years. Providing fresh soil for a plant like that is good.
If it’s a succulent or cactus, I would prob repot much less frequently like every 2-4 years (maybe less but Dave the Cactus Guy could prob speak more to repotting cacti)

But best to check the roots and if there are more roots than soil than you should pot up 1-2” for smaller pots. I go up 2-4” on pots over 12” in diameter.

Is there a way to check to roots without taking all the dirt out of the pot? I can imagine that would be stressful to the plant.

If you see a lot of roots coming out of the bottom holes that may mean it is due for repot, but not always. Best to ensure you have plants in a nursery liner pot which makes it easier to take completely out to check the roots.

if a plant is thriving in its current conditions, i wouldn’t repot it. (: you usually only need to repot when the plant is struggling in some way or the if roots are coming out of the pot. or if it just doesn’t look as happy, you can freshen up the soil. it’s not necessary yearly though.

I dislike repotting. It’s a pain. I try buying plants in the size I want and keep it in the same nursery plastic pot. I will repot to a larger size if I could only budget for a small starter plant and the plant is ready for a bigger pot. I only repot when the plant is struggling because of overgrown roots. Some plants like the overgrown roots condition like spider plants, snake plants, pony tail palms and my monstera. I rarely repot these plants.

i repot when a plant needs it, such as roots coming out of the bottom, it has gnats, or just needs better soil, i have repotted in spring summer autumn and winter and all of the plant are doing fine, probably spring/summer is best but mine are fine all year round. and when it says repot once a year, i don’t 🤣
