Hey y’all!!! I’m a new plant mama and I have no idea what soil/fertilizer to use for my plants. I have a Snake Plant and a Money Tree. I, also, don’t know how to save my Money Tree. She looks like her base is rotting, but her leaves are still very green??

Soil for snake plant has to be very very well draining since they are desert type of plants. I have mine in a mix of cactus succulent soil, orchid bark and chunky perlite (I’d say it’s 20%, 40% and 40% respectively). I’m not sure about the money tree though 😬

Highly suggest Espoma Organic succulent and cactus mix and their all-purpose potting mix. You can combine the two for the snake plant, or just use the succulent mix but don’t add extra perlite unless you know you overwater it. I have yet to have a money tree, so look at what the app is suggesting in terms of soil types, but I’ve seen a lot of great reviews on Fox Farm’s Ocean Forest Organic All-Purpose Potting mix, and plan on picking some up this week to repot my peperomias and indoor hostas.

Definitely repot the money tree soon if the roots are rotting. If you’ve never had to deal with root rot or repot one, I can try to walk you through it. It’s a good sign if the leaves are still looking good. That might mean the root rot is newer and hasn’t spread to the top of your plant yet, meaning it’s got an even higher chance of recovering once it’s repotted.
1\. Wash all of the soil off and reduce the plant to its roots as much as possible. If it’s very root bound, soak the plant in its soil out of the pot for at least an hour or two, then try to carefully remove the plant from the soil.
2\. Soak the roots in hydrogen peroxide for at least 30 minutes, cut the rotting roots as far up as you can, rinse them again in some hydrogen peroxide, then rinse once more with water and lightly dry the roots off with a paper towel before repotting.
3\. Clean the pot it was in our if you’re gonna reuse it and dry it off completely, just to make sure any possible bacteria or pests or dirt that caused the root rot doesn’t contaminate the new soil. Get the right soil for your plant, DO NOT REUSE ANY OF THE SOIL FROM THE POT IT WAS IN. Toss that soil. Use fresh soil to repot it, and give it a week or so before watering it, especially if the root rot was from overwatering. If you’re worried about overwatering it again, add perlite to your soil mix when repotting it to improve the drainage

Really hope this helps! Money trees are very pretty. Good luck with both. The last thing you might wanna check is that you aren’t watering it when the soil is still wet. I stick bamboo/barbecue skewers into the soil when the app tells me to water to see if the soil is dry enough to be watered again. The app is more like a guide to know WHEN to check your soil to see if it should be watered again. Don’t water it as often as the app says if it’s still wet when you’re going to water it again. You can customize when it tells you to water it in the plant’s settings.
The last thing to check is that it’s in the right amount of sunlight. If it’s in a lower light condition than what’s recommended, and you’re sure you’re not overwatering it, it might not be getting enough sunlight to help the soil dry out as much as it needs to.

No problem! Root rot is scary, but if you’re saying the leaves are still looking healthy, you definitely have a good chance at ensuring it survives if you cut the rotted roots, soak them in hydrogen peroxide, and repot them in fresh, dry soil

When you are looking at each individual plant in your Planta app, click “care info” (near the top), then scroll way down and you’ll find out the recommended soil mix

if the money tree base looks like it’s rotting, it could be root rot. definitely repot and take the proper steps to help it

As a recovering overwaterer I can relate to this 😂 best thing I did was buy a soil moisture meter
