# After considerable research, I think I’m going to switch a couple of…

_Gepostet von Lynda am 2025-03-07_

After considerable research, I think I’m going to switch a couple of my very small calatheas, from regular soil to leca, rather than pon. (They’re in a tropical plant soil, now.) Calatheas are such a pain in the tutu… 🙄! I have constant problems with leaf tips turning brown, and edges of leaves getting spots, so I decided to give this a try. Any tips would be really useful, at this point… TIA!
PS. I think I might also try this with my golden mosaic, and possibly, some of my anthuriums; what do you think?

I have a few anthurium and alocasia in pon or leca and they do really well. Most were changed over last spring/summer

That settles it… I’m switching several of my plants over to pon or leca! Which substrate do you like best, and why? I really depend on you to give me straight answers… like you have monetary interest in one of those companies??? LOL!
PS. I told you it was one of those days… 🤭!

Oh man, if i could get some plant supply sponsorships!!! 😆 🤣 this past summer I had replanted several alocasia or anthurium in pon or leca to see how it went. And it's been really good! I plan to move some more over once I get the gumption, but bought all the supplies to make my own pon this time from a mix that is 4:Perlite to 2: pumice to 2: lava rock to 1: fluval stratum that i saw on Nick @ NXC plants YouTube. Here's an alocasia in leca

I didn’t see any brown tips on those plants; that’s amazing! I want that for my plants! I checked out pon on Amazon, and it was almost 90 bucks! But, I guess I’ll bite the bullet, and start changing a few plants over to pon. I think you said, somewhere in the many posts, that you sprayed the pon with bleach; is that right? Like a 10% solution? Anything else I should know before I start this? Thanks so much for all of your help! Maybe you’d better pray for my plants…😱!

The only other thing is getting off as much soil as possible. I had to soak a few plants for a bit, then sprayed them with the kitchen sprayer on low strength (not full pressure)

Side note..... since you called me out on probably not having all my plants in the app, I've been trying to add them all, and break up duplicates and even props.... .... I'm so over it 😆 😂 I'm up to 390

At the risk of sounding
Like a newbie… what does Pon stand for?

#### Wolfen 🐺 antwortete am 2025-03-08

I honestly have no clue lol, I don't think it's an actual acronym. It refers to a soil-less growing media though, usually mineral type base with lava rock, pumice and zeolite as the most common base

When you asked, what does PON mean, I didn’t know myself, so I asked, Siri, and this is the answer she gave me… I hope this helps!l

So for my self watering pots, which i don't actually have that many of right now. I have Leca, Pon, or just my regular aroid mix. I honestly do not have a preference. When I tested pon and leca this past year to see of i had a preference, i couldn't find one really. I also use the pon and leca NOT in self-watering pots. Also like it that way, i just water around the pot instead of one spot. So all the roots get watered. When I repot this month, my main thing to look at was going to be how corm growth went in the leca vs the pon.

The pon recipe came from Nick @ nxcplants. He grows mainly anthurium. But a fre others. Mostly in self-watering semi-hydro set ups. The fluval mix is the nutrirnt portion of the mix. And then he adds liquid fertilizer/nutrients. This video is the video he talks about what substrates he uses for each age level of his anthurium.

So, I think I’m going to give your pon, using the ingredients you suggested, a try! It’s gotta be cheaper than ordering it premade, and I’m thinking there won’t be any shipping charges. Have you made up your pon, already? If so, any tips would be greatly appreciated! (As if you haven’t done enough already…🙄!)
TXS a bunch; you’re really a peach!

Ypu know im happy to help 😊 I don't have any pics from mixing it up. I can get some when I do this much bigger batch. I basically have a lidded bin, that's for pet food. And it came with a scoop. So I use the scoop as the "parts" base. Scoop everything in and then mix together throughly. The perlite tends to migrate to the top since its lighter in weight. So just make sure you give a good rotation to it, so you dont end up with some pots that are mostly perlite.

#### Lynda antwortete am 2025-03-10

Gotcha! I think I’m on my way to getting this figured out. I just have to order the different parts to this mix; I guess I should call it, this “substrate”! TXS so much for all your help… I really do appreciate it, LOTS!
PS. If you get any pictures, that would be great; I’m a visual learner… 🙉!

No worries I will be sure to take some for ya. I love a visual myself. My friend and niece have been badgering me to start a plant TikTok or YouTube 😆

I was just rereading this text about pon, and realized I hadn’t seen your last note here. I haven’t seen any recent posts from you lately, and wonder how you’re doing. If you have a moment, give me a holler, and let me know what you’ve been up to… besides plants…😵‍💫! My plants are starting to let me relax a bit as it’s cooling down, and they’re not as thirsty as they’ve been this summer… which I really appreciate! How about you?
