# Help! I accidentally snapped the top off my billietiae while trying…

_Pubblicato da Deana il 2025-10-22_

Help! I accidentally snapped the top off my billietiae while trying to put it on a moss pole. How do I save the mother plant? I put the broke part in water to propagate it that was since it had a node on it. Anything helps

The mother plant will likely be fine, just a little stunted at first. Just keep taking care of the original plant the same way you were before the break. She will eventually create a new growth point and start pushing out new growth from there.

🌿 1. For the broken top (the cutting)

You already did the right thing by placing it in water — nice job!
To ensure it roots well:
• Keep at least one node (the bump where a leaf and aerial root come out) underwater.
• Use filtered or distilled water and change it every 3–4 days.
• Keep it in bright, indirect light — no direct sun.
• Optional: Add a drop of liquid rooting hormone or a little Superthrive to encourage faster rooting.
• Once the roots are 2–3 inches long, pot it up in a chunky aroid mix (e.g., orchid bark + perlite + coco coir).

⸻

🌱 2. For the mother plant

Don’t worry — it will likely bounce back:
• Leave the broken spot untouched (do not seal with wax or cinnamon unless it looks mushy).
• Keep the soil slightly moist but not wet, as overwatering can lead to rot while it’s healing.
• Ensure it’s getting bright, indirect light and stable warmth (no cold drafts).
• Within a few weeks to a couple of months, it should push out new growth from a dormant node near the break.

⸻

🪴 Bonus Tip:

If you want to speed up new growth from the mother plant:
• You can lightly mist or wipe the node area to keep it from drying out too much.
• Make sure it has good humidity (around 60% or higher if possible).

Since this is a thick stem, I personally let it dry a few hours before putting in water. But yes it will be fine!
