# I have had this queen of the night plant for about 4 years now and it…

_Posted by Stephanie on 2025-01-13_

I have had this queen of the night plant for about 4 years now and it does great outside in the summer and when I bring it in for the winter it starts to turn brown. I moved it into my livingroom and now it is happy and is growing great but the old leaves still have some brown on them. Should I cut the brown off or leave it. Thanks for any help

Make sure there is no standing water at the bottom of the pot or in the drainage dish which can cause root rot. It’s a jungle cactus and an epiphyte that rots quickly in constantly wet soil. I recommend checking for root rot.

You can cut off the scarred leaves if there are sufficient leaves left for photosynthesis. They are easy to propagate. Cut the leaves into 3 inch pieces, mark the bottom/top, let them dry out a couple of days and put in water or soil. You can lay it on its spine if you can’t remember which end goes into soil. Aerial roots will grow from the back spine and root into moist soil.

They need lots of bright filtered light. They can take direct morning sun. They can grow naked stems and let leaves die off when looking for light. You may have a low light issue. 🍀🪴

Thanks for the help. I let it dry out between each watering so I don't think it's root rot but I will check. I will try propagating it now too. I wasn't sure how to do it with this plant. I got it as a gift and it only had one leaf at that time. I will also move it closer to the window. Thanks again

I just noticed that some of the leaves have roots ( I think) growing out of them. Can these be planted and if so what do I do. Thanks

These are aerial roots at the top of the leaf. You will be planting it upside down if you stick that end in soil or water. Just cut off a 3 inch piece and put the cut end at least 1 inch deep in water/soil after the cut dries out.

Photo of aerial roots formed when a stem partially broke. It would have planted itself if the stem completely broke off. I can cut this and plant in water or soil. Letting the cuttings dry out a couple of days gives the plant incentive to put out roots. The leaf sections can live a couple of weeks without water. They will just shrivel.
