# My little “Triangularis” is going on her usual binge of dropping…

_Gepostet von Lynda am 2025-01-28_

My little “Triangularis” is going on her usual binge of dropping leaves; I think it’s a seasonal thing. However, I’ve noticed these black spots on the backs of her leaves… ☹️! What is it? She’s been treated for black spot, so I don’t know if it’s the leftover markings of that disease, or if it’s something else. Could it be SCALE? I do have a large ficus in a back bedroom, that’s not near her, that is consistently treated for scale, but it doesn’t look like this at all… her spots are small white sticky circles. HELP!… TIA!

I have this variety also I call it a mistletoe fig. Mine is also going through the leaf drop stage. It loved being outside last summer but after bringing it in in the fall it started dropping leaves. There's hardly any left now but I have great hopes for it this spring.

I just checked the progress reports for my little ficus, and I had noted that she had a bad leaf drop in May ‘24, and then another this month; both seem to concide with seasonal changes. After the profound leaf drop last May, I noticed that in time… I can’t remember how much… little teeny brown sprouts showed up all over her stems. They actually looked just like a dried up nothing; however, in time, they all turned into lovely new leaves! She did recover, and has looked great, until now…☹️! I’ve done some research, and found that this is nothing unusual for ficus plants. I’m betting that your mistletoe fig will be just fine, in time. Good luck!

The spots on the back of the leaf don't look a lot like scale but it's hard to tell. Are there bumps on the stems or the leaf petioles? Scales can leave a sticky residue especially during their motile stage.

YES! I ran my hand up and down the stems, and it was sticky… not big time, but definitely sticky! I went ahead and applied Bonides Systemic House Plant insect control granules, which is what I use for my other ficus tree, which is in the bedroom. How does scale travel from one end of the house to the other, when they’re not in any contact with each other? Go figure… I guess I’ll have to check the rest of my ficus plants. Do you know how susceptible rubber trees are to scale? TIA!

PS. TXS for reminding me to check for stickiness!

Scale will attack rubber plant but I've never been sure how they get around.

just googled it - this post got me curious lol
apparently they can only really move during their early stage of life, or the crawler stage. wind and humain aid, like moving your plants or maybe them hitching a ride is how they seem to travel. pesky little buggers.

Pesky little buggers… for sure!

Thanks for checking… I should’ve done that myself… 😵‍💫!
