How do you get smoke odour out of plants?

I purchased two plants from a buy and sell group. Trouble is the owner is a smoker. The plants and pots reek of smoke and the smell is not dissipating. I had them quarantined in hopes it would go away. I live in Canada so it’s not an option to put them outside (snow) or in the unheated garage. Suggestions? Repot probably. But I swear even the leaves stink. I do figure that if they lasted there, I should be able to keep them alive with my fresh air.

They are a spider plant and a happy bean plant. Both in 5.5” pots.

Maybe try spraying down the whole plant with diluted vinegar and wiping it down? I think you’re right, repotting will be beneficial!

For the spider plant, I'd give it a good rinse in the sink/shower during the repot. Try to get as much dirt off the roots as possible. It's the pot and the dirt that will hold most of the smell. Not sure what the other plant is, so I wouldn't recommend a shower unless you know it's safe to wet the leaves/stem

I'd use a leaf shine on them and wipe them down. DEFINITELY repot, it's most likely in the soil. And if the pots are porous, toss them. If they are glazed, give them a good scrub. 2c water, 1/2 tsp vinegar, 2 drops castile soap, 2 drops coconut oil. Ypu want want to hold back the oil. Until after the first cleaning, you wouldn't want to trap anything in, and its just for shine effect. I'd let it sit for say 15-30 mins and rinse off. I remember when my parents stopped smoking. They never did in the house, but wwould stand on the porch. And I just see all the brown tar they washed off the dining room walls, just from it occasionally gusting in from the porch. Yuck

Repot.
I had terra cotta that stank so bad from a smoker. It did finally dissipate after half a dozen waterings or so, but it was gross until then. The plant itself will probably stop smelling once it has clean soil. The pot needs to be removed and soaked a number of times to get the odor out.

Change the pot if it’s plastic. Change it faster if it’s terra cotta.
Replace the top inch of soil.
Gently rinse the leaves with a dawn soap water solution to cute tar that sticks to the leaves.

Drastic: Chop off all but 1 inch of leaves, if it’s a larger plant. The plant will rush to put out new leaves (my lawn guys weed whack my in-ground spider plants once a season. They grow back quickly.) I lived with my smoker husband. His outdoor potted plants/ash tray got the worst of it. 😂
