So need some plant experts on this one (I’m somewhere on the intermediate level as far as plants are concerned - I have around 50+ plants and have several in self watering pots that are doing phenomenal).
However, I know self watering pots are controversial in the plant community LOL - but wondering if in this case putting a Aglaonema in one was a bad idea \& if it’s causing rot?🤔
it’s a very contradicting situation cause:
1\. I cut off about a dozen “yellowing leaves” (photo below) today.
2.it also has a ton of new growth which makes me think it’s fine but might need to be watered less? (Note: I water it every 12 days instead of every week to account for the extra water at the bottom it’s soaking up).

Hhmmmm…… have you checked the roots? I am also intermediate, and I know conditions will be totally different, but I have three different aglaonemas, two outside in my porch and one inside. I waster them about once every three weeks, and I could say my are doing well too. They are putting out new growth and I have not had too many dead/yellowing leaves on them yet .

I would keep mine outdoors - buuut I live in Dallas \& the heat is crazyyy here so not sure if she’d make it🤔 but glad yours are doing well - do you live in a hot environment?

It gets hot! Maybe not Texas hot, but it gets hot and humid-lol! I live in Indiana.

Personally, I despise self watering pots, and I think they can kill even the hardiest of low maintenance plants like aglaonema. I bottom watered mine one a week in the summer (probably closer to every 9 days now) to prevent root rot and overwatering. Did it come in a self watering pot, or has it been repotted since it was first bought? If it hasn’t been repotted, it’s possible it isn’t just the self watering pot, but perhaps the type of soil it’s in. I’d definitely check the roots for rot.

I definitely respect that! (Personally, they work well for some of my plants- like philodendrons \*at least for now\*) I also get lazy w/ so many plants to water in my 3 story townhome so it helps with not having to water as nearly as much! But yes, I repotted it in that pot in a chunky tropical soil mix with extra perlite as well to hopefully compensate for it being in self watering. It’s bean in there for about a year. I will probably just go ahead and take it out like you said, check the roots, and switch this one to a terracotta pot instead if it’s worth saving. Photo below though has been in a self watering pot for over a year and thrives - so I swear it works for some plants!🤔

Nice philodendron! And yeah, everyone’s got their own experiences with it. Lemme know if there is any rot, and I’d be happy to walk you through treating it. If you end up having to repot, mine was in a mix of Espoma’s Cactus and Succulent and All-Purpose Soil mixes, which both contain perlite, as well as a few osmocote slow release fertilizer pellets. Good luck with the aglaonema! They’re such beautiful plants! I was sad to have to give mine away because of my dog 😢
