Hi! As I’ve been a plant parent for a little over a year, 2 of my plants are in need of repotting for the first time. This is kind of a silly question, but does anyone have any tips (or mistakes to avoid) when repotting so as not to shock and kill my plants? Also, how long after repotting do you generally resume fertilizing? Thanks!

I don’t know about fertilzing but here’s a few tips. When repotting be sure to be very gentle you don’t want to break the roots. Get rid ir the old soil and replace with fresh soil. You should cut dead or rotten roots Keep not of when you reported the plant to know when to repot her again. It would really help the plant if you left her rest for a few minutes on cold water before putting her on the new pot , it relax’s the plant a lot. That’s about it you can correct me if I’m wrong sorry for the weird English it’s not my first language

Thank you!

Do you go ahead and water your plant in the new pot if it is time or near time? Or would that shock it too much?

I believe watering right away should be fine as long as the plant isn’t a succulent/cactus of some kind, but I’m not 100% certain

Just be gentle with the roots

if the roots are healthy and not compacted there’s no need to detangle the roots or remove old soil. removing media from the roots, no matter how gentle you are, will remove some of the root hairs as well. damage to the roots can cause transplant shock so i never recommend detangling roots to newbies unless the root system is thoroughly compacted or otherwise at risk.

Here are my tips after finding out the hard way:

Use plastic pots with lots of drainage holes then put that into a decorative container if you’re using. Most of the containers I find have 1 hole, if any, and it’s not enough. (I suppose this depends a lot on your plant but all of mine suffered that were planted straight into containers. Once I switched to plastic they perked back up.)

Choose a pot only 1”-2” bigger than what it’s in now.

Really pay attention to the soil you use. I found my miracle grow potting mix was not a one size fits all. Adding coco coir and perlite to the mix really helped mine but Google your specific plant’s needs. Planta will give you general information

I was told to skip fertilizer until the next schedule time to give them a chance to acclimate.

Good luck!
