I’m having problems with yellowing leaves on my synogonium. I read a post in the past that said it’s better to let these plants dry out a bit, and I have noticed less yellowing with less water; however, it still tends to have some yellow leaves. My question is this… what percentage of moisture should I look for on my water meter… 50%, 35%, 20%? IDK! So, please help… TIA!

I water when soil moisture hits upper teens. Measuring at the bottom of a correctly sized pot.

There are three on this shelf and that’s how they have watered for months.

I’m a bit confused; do you put them in the bathtub to be watered, or what? TIA!
PS. You have a beautiful set up there; I wish I had one just like that!

Sorry but the plants don’t get to use that tub. They just provide some relaxation vibes.

Well thank you. Plants are monstera, syngonium wendlandii, syngonium pink perfection, and syngonium berry allusion. Humidifier was just a cheap one from Amazon.

Let the soil dry out. The leaves will be slightly limp when it needs water. Plus, fungus gnats hate this one trick. 😁 They can’t survive without constantly wet soil. No need for yellow sticky bug collectors when the soil is too dry to support the gnats.

Leaves turn yellow and occasionally die off. It’s the normal process since new leaves always replace the old. Yellowing can indicate overwatering or a slow drying soil.

Water meters are not precise. They only extrapolate moisture levels since they measure electrical resistance. My two meters showed different moisture measurements in the same pot and depth of soil. I stopped using them and strictly use bamboo meat skewers to show moisture remains in the soil. 🍀🪴

I have 12 varieties of syngoniums with many duplicates from propagation. My oldest is White Butterfly, over 20 years old. Several plants from it are shown in the foreground of the photo.

WOW! What a beautiful collection, and I can’t believe your white butterfly is over 20 years old; you should be called the queen of syngoniums! Thank you so much for your clarification on watering these plants; it’s just what I was looking for. However, one thing I’m not sure of, and that’s using a wooden stake to measure moisture for plants that have medium watering needs. I use a wooden stake all the time to test the watering needs for plants that like to dry out… that’s easy! Can you tell me what your wooden stake looks like for a medium needs plant, perhaps a picture? That would be so helpful! TIA!

I give water when the plants look slightly limp or tired. I don’t have cacti and have only 2 succulents growing on their own. The rest are tropicals with hoyas. Hoyas are are low water plants.

Each environment is different. Watering needs can change based on seasons, temperatures, humidity and more. So, I take cues from the plants. Some may dry out a bit. Some die off. But, most recover when I understand what makes it happy. It’s a trial and error for each plant. I may have confused you more.

I appreciate your info on when to water certain plants; it was very thorough and concise! But I still don’t understand how to use a wooden stake to determine when to water a medium needs plant. TIA!
