So this growth came out of my baby fig plant last week. It almost looks like it could be a flower to me, but I don’t think baby figs develop flowers. Any idea what this is? I’ve had to plant for maybe two years and I’ve never seen anything like it.

Hi there 👋 if this is the correct photo you meant to attach, I want to let you know that’s not a baby fig. That’s a variegated peperomia obtusifolia. Here’s one of mine for comparison. The flower is perfectly normal and a sign of good health. If you don’t like them and would rather the plant uses its energy on foliage rather than flowers, you can gently twist it off or simply wait for it to naturally die off over time. They naturally detach themselves once their bloom cycle is over, so don’t be alarmed if you see a fallen flower in a month or so. Hope this helps.

Awesome. Planta identified it as baby fig! Thanks for the clarification!

No problem! Do you want some care tips for it? They make for really great houseplants (and they’re much easier to care for than figs, thankfully) 😊

Sure!!

Btw, I had it wrong. The app identified it as a baby RUBBER plant, not fig, which I believe is correct…but I’ll still take tips🙂

Here’s some tips for your peperomia: 😊
\- Try to keep the leaves dry during waterings. Placing the plant in a bowl/container with water for 10-20 minutes, then resting it to dry is a great way to water it without getting the leaves wet.
\- Wait at least 12-14 days before waterings. Let the soil completely dry out between waterings. Keep leaves dry and bottom-water.
\- An easy way to check if the soil is dry enough is to stick a bamboo/barbecue skewer all the way to the bottom of the soil, then taking it out. If the soil sticks to it, wait at least 2 days, then check again. If the skewer comes out clean and dry, with nothing sticking to it, it should be safe to water. I use Planta more like a scheduled timer to check if the soil is dry enough to water rather than a surefire schedule to water it every time. You can change your plant’s individual settings to a “custom watering schedule” to fit how often you’re currently watering them, and change it any time to adjust to your plant’s specific drying habits.
\- Misting and pebble trays don’t really increase humidity for plants, and misting can damage some plants. A top-filling humidifier is much more effective for humidity-loving houseplants.
\- Enjoys part-sun, part-shade to full-sun/at least 4-6 hours of sunlight.
\- Common problems are yellow leaves (overwatering), edema (poor soil drainage/temperature/humidty changes), shriveled leaves (too little/too much sun), and drooping leaves (underwatering).
\- Treat mealybugs with isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip. Don’t let the alcohol touch the soil. Treat fungus gnats with mosquito bit tea, sticky traps, and repotting.
\- Best kept at 64-77°F. Lowest survivable temperature is 41°F.
\- Repot every year with cactus and succulent/epiphytic/bromeliad/orchid potting mix. Avoid Miracle Grow’s soil, even their cactus mix. I use Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent mix for all my peperomias.
\- They like being more snug in their pots, and even get a little root-bound. Don’t repot it in any pot more than 1-2 inches in diameter to the width of the plant’s root ball. They need to either be in a terra cotta pot with at least one large drainage hole, or a plastic pot with multiple drainage holes. Avoid glazed ceramic pots for these as they will hold too much moisture that this plant cannot handle.
