# Any suggestions ? Japanese box wood, I used to not care for them,…

_Posted by ElVecinoGardening on 2024-05-25_

Any suggestions ? Japanese box wood, I used to not care for them, rarely watering and were green… Then I started watering and fertilizing as suggested by the app and have started to turn brown. Also, as I started to water and fertilize the weather has been above 100 degrees.

So don’t know if it could’ve been a combination of everything or the sun or overwatering.

They really have a hard time with temps over 80° and having them next to cement and with rocks covering, it causes them to get hotter. I would suggest changing to mulch as a first step (if possible. I wonder if there is boxwood blight in your area, like in ours.

I agree, I have them in my front yard that gets the hot afternoon sun here in Alabama… I soak them every few days and have mulch over them. Seems to work for me 👍🏻

I’m in Phoenix where it gets over 100 degrees, and mine are doing pretty good right now, I water every day in the summer, and if it’s extremely hot like 114 I cover with shade, and I agree with the rocks/cement does make it hotter. I just have soil around mine

Thats good to know! I had never thought about the rocks attracting more heat to it’s surrounding. I appreciate y’alls advice !
