Watered the ZZ today and I feel like the water is running straight through it? I haven’t repotted since purchase.

That might be why. Check to see if it’s root bound. If the dirt isn’t soaking anything up, it might be too tightly packed

I read somewhere not to repot new plants when first getting them but I see people on insta doing it all the time

Some plants need time to adjust in new homes. However, sometimes stressing a plant out is necessary in order for them to be healthy in the long run.

To transplant or not would depend somewhat on the time of year and the type of plant. Some of them are touchy and are better off planted at the beginning of the growing season. Other plants are fine whenever you want to plant them. I don't consider ZZ as an overly particular plant. I would not transplant it though if the roots are not crowded. I think a zz like to be a little on the crowded side. If you do decide to transplant, I'd give it a good soak for 15 minutes or so before transplanting.

I squeezed around the nursery pot and it isn’t super hard or anything.

It may have become hydrophobic from being overly dry at one time. It does not necessarily mean that it is root bound. Try bottom watering it. Place into a container deeper than the planter. Fill the container up to the pot rim without allowing water to flow into the planter. Let it take up water for 30 minutes or more. Soil on top should be moist. Then let it thoroughly drain. If hydrophobic it may even want to float.

I pulled the stick out and it was pretty wet, not going to lie. It just kind of feels like the water is running straight through it

Maybe it’s overwatered then.

ZZs have rhizomes, so don't keep the soil too wet as they store their own supply. It's probably just telling you it's ok for now!

You can also air rate the soil by sticking something in it a dozen times, something like a chopstick

Unless you pull the plant out of the pot to see if it is root bound, I'm going to go with the hydrophobic suggestion. Give it a good soak. While it does have rhizomes and it can draw on the moisture in the rhizomes ideally you want to water it before it needs to do that. If your rhizomes look shrively or wrinkled I think you should water more frequently or more deeply. Whether you water every week or every month you should always water deeply till the moisture runs from the bottom of the pot. As long as the pot has drain holes you cannot water too much but you can water too often.
