# Recently bought a Spider plant (Bonnie), polka dot plant, string of…

_Posted by Deb on 2024-02-20_

Recently bought a Spider plant (Bonnie), polka dot plant, string of turtles, and Peperomia. I’ve seen conflicting advice about what level of moisture for each. I’m going to use a moisture meter for them, does anybody use one and have advice on what number to water each one at?
What I’ve found has been Peperomia- 1 or 3, Spider-3, Polka dot- 4-5, turtle-4. Some of those seem off to me based on the watering recommendations that’s recommended on this app. Any advice? Thank you!!

i wouldn’t recommend following a moisture meter— they don’t actually measure the moisture level of the soil but rather its conductivity, which depends on many more factors than just the amount of water in the soil; they can provide very inaccurate readings.
the most accurate ways to measure the moisture level of the soil are your fingers, the pots’ weight, or a bamboo skewer.
for plants that prefer to remain moist like the polka dot plant, feel the top inch or two of soil. once the topsoil has dried, it’s time to water. for plants that prefer to dry out somewhat like your peperomias, stick a bamboo skewer all the way to the bottom of the pot and leave it there for a few minutes. it’s time to water if there are crumbs of moist soil only on the bottom of the skewer, the top 3/4 at least should be dry. for your spider plant, i would recommend waiting until the leaves start to droop just a little before watering. most or all of the soil should be dry when you water. spider plants are semi-succulent due to their robust tuberous roots and can handle long periods of drought, so it’s best to treat them like a medium-light succulent.

Most water meters have a guide on the packaging that they arrive in. I also found this reference that I sometimes use
