# Hi everyone!! I’m kind of a new plant mom? i’ve had 6 of my plants…

Hi everyone!!
I’m kind of a new plant mom? i’ve had 6 of my plants for a long time, but i recently moved to arizona from california, when i moved i left all my plants behind for about 9 months, i recently just went back and brought them home with me. HOWEVER. before i moved, it had been about 6-8 months since anyone had new soil or been repotted. it’s now been over a year, and given i got new plants recently i decided it’s time to repot everyone. except idk what i’m doing. the plant store i bought the 6 from, made their own soil in the store so that’s what i used and what the 6 all have. they’re all indoor, 2 dracaena, aloe, ZZ, and 2 snake plants. what kind of soil do i use?!! and what liquid fertilizer do you guys recommend.
tips for my other plants are much appreciated as well. for reference i also have a cactus, ivy, and philo?? (the last one has a ripped tag so idk what it is really) can i use the same soil for all of these plants? same fertilizer? who needs more/less sunlight???
i recently came to the realization that i have no idea what im doing and i don’t wanna be a bad plant parent😭😭
ALSO are coffee grounds actually good fertilizer for your plants? or if i try that am i going to kill them all?? if they’re good, what do i do? like sprinkle some on top, or mix it in with my soil??

Hey lovely
So I’m no expert but have found some useful advice in the app.
When you scan or search for your plant you can go to it \& click the info icon.
In there you’ll find the recommended medium/soil type peach of your plants along with preferred lighting, temp \& humidity xxx

I had a bad experience using coffee grounds I think they have to compost first. Would not recommend. For your dracaena, snake, and zz plants I have had good experience with regular potting soil. They’re very easy plants and some of my first that have made it quite a long time. Good luck!

Also, hit the settings icon \& fill in as much info as possible, it’ll help keep the action reminders accurate.
That said, everyone has a different environment so if it says you should water, check the soil \& see does it actually need watering right now? If not hit snooze \& it’ll remind you to check again in a few days 👏👏👏

most tropical indoor plants can use a pretty easy and simple soil mix: equal parts indoor potting soil (I use the gray bag by Miracle-Gro), orchid bark, and perlite. for succulents/cacti, I mix a succulent/cacti soil with orchid bark and perlite. I don’t repot succulents as often so I just have a tiny supply of that.

do not use coffee grounds. I use a great fertilizer and use it with every watering even in the winter, as I have grow lights. it’s called Foliage Pro.

all of your succulents (aloe, zz, cactus, snake plants, and other dracaena) should be in a gritty mix that’s at least around half inorganic matter like perlite and pumice for maximum drainage. these plants prefer to dry out quickly and some prefer to stay dry for a few days (cactus) or even weeks (zz, aloe) before watering. the tropical vining plants like philodendron will appreciate a well-draining mix as well but it should have more bark for a slightly more moisture-retentive but still airy mix.
i don’t use liquid fertilizer, i have worm castings for my succulents (desert plants) that don’t need many nutrients at all, and a nitrogen-heavy (foliage-focus) powder fertilizer with added mycorrhizae (beneficial fungi) that i use for my leafy plants. flowering plants and succulents also get a bit of bone meal for extra calcium and phosphorus, that will help support strong roots and blooms. only use coffee grounds and other kitchen waste if they’ve been composted.
i would highly suggest finding out exactly what species you have and researching care methods online for that species. i have a chart in my journal that contains the scientific name of each plant, and its light, water, soil, humidity, temperature preferences, etc. this way i can easily reference any pertinent information.

I recommend this fertilizer. It’s only $12 on Amazon and it is AMAZING!! It works for all plants. Indoor and outdoor. A woman who has been an expert in plant care for decades said it’s what she uses in one of her books. Read all the reviews on Amazon. It’s wonderful. Literally the next day I noticed my plants were greener, perkier, etc.

You can read reviews on Amazon, it’s pretty awesome! Even if you don’t buy it on Amazon, you can at least read the reviews. Good luck on your plant journey!! I’m pretty new to indoor plants as well, I will tell you, you should buy this book. It has the BEST info you can understand. Even experienced plant experts say they learned something from this book. A lot of people said they wish they had it at the start of their journey and they wouldn’t have lost so many of their plants. Highly recommend!! I didn’t think it was possible not to be able to put a book down about plants, but it’s amazing!! Beautiful pictures as well. It’s almost 50% off right now!!
