My guess is not enough aeration in the soil/too much soil/overwatering. Possibly not enough light, but dieffenbachias don’t need much.

I recommend an airy, chunky soil mix for dieffenbachias, and letting them dry out completely between waterings. I find that most shady plants need to dry out quite a bit between waterings.

This is the “how it started, how it’s going” for the dieffenbachia I was given last June.

I’m looking at your settings for the plant vs. the plant requirements and I have 2 questions - you have that it’s in full sun, is it? It’s a part sun/part shade plant. Also, it requires high humidity, is it in a high humidity environment?

It’s indoor right now, Montreal is still in spring. It’s infront of my window at work.

So part sun is 3-6 hours of sun, max. And plants that require high humidity have to have humidity or they won’t thrive. You will have to get a little humidifier or find it a more humid space.
