# Plant friends plz share your wisdom. brought this plant home…

_Posted by Callie on 2024-02-24_

Plant friends plz share your wisdom.
brought this plant home yesterday from the nursery. Re potted it in “Tropical Soil” by Miracle Grow. Realized that I put it in a pot with 0 drainage.

What kind of pot should I purchase, or should I just buy a plastic pot with holes to put inside of this pot?
And what kind of soil or mixture should I use? Should there be rocks at the bottom?

Thank you for all of your guidance!

I have a plant just like that and it’s pot has zero drainage so I think it’s gonna be fine

Your “a plant” is lucky and I doubt you could go buy a plant from a nursery right now, put it in a 0 drainage pot, and have everything work out all right. I’d bet money you’d kill it. Maybe if it was terracotta you’d be ok.. because that technically drains

Yeah no drainage will eventually be a death sentence. If you’re not going to take the inner pot out regularly when you water, I would definitely add a 1”-1.5” layer of stones between the two pots so you don’t end up keeping the soil/roots waterlogged

Any kind of stones or rocks that you recommend? Thank you!

You don’t need 50lbs of it but something like this would work. Lowes/Home Depot has something smaller usually in the plant area

Thank you!

I would drill a few holes on the bottom. Get someone to help you lean it and buy a specific drill bit off Amazon. I do it all the time!

I had a similar issue and I just made holes in my pot that it came in- it was a flexible plastic one though so it wasn’t too hard. I’m not sure what your pot material is but if it’s plastic this might be easier!

I know your post is about drainage, but just also wanted to point out that your plant will likely need a lot more light than what’s shown here as well. Good luck with everything, it’s a beautiful plant.
