Ok, I’m feeling a bit silly doing this, but I got an avocado pit and, for some reason, decided to try and… propagate-ish it? I have no idea how this works or if I’m even doing this right, so please help, haha
I couldn’t get the toothpick through the avocado so I just… got an umbrella one and got a ✨tropical✨ avocado pit now, lol
can anyone help?

I think I can help, since I grew one from a seed into a 30 foot tree when I was much younger. In fact, I think I was in school and did it for some kind of project, but started by poking toothpicks into the side of an avocado seed, with my dad‘s help. Of course, it took years to grow into the mammoth tree that it became; I remember it shaded our entire patio! All I did was keep it in clean water, and it just grew and grew, kind of like the bean in Jack and the Bean Stalk! Best of luck! I do hope you have a large place to plant it when it grows up!

I've never had luck propagating them in water, but I have got two currently growing in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag.

Google it.

I feel like asking in a space literally made for plant lovers and caretakers is also valid, I'm sure they also googled it but are looking to cross reference.

i think the point of having the 2 toothpicks is so that it is able to sit at the top of a full glass of water (as seen in picture), so if youre gonna have it at the bottom, then i dont think the umbrella is nessicary, tho it does make it cute, lol!

i think you can also loosely wrap it in a damp paper towel, put that in a plastic baggie, put it somewhere warm/sunny, and wait for a sprout to emerge in a few days(?). when this happens, you can plant it in some soil, and it should root and keep growing!

good luck!

When I started mine, I cleaned it off and let it sit submerged in water for 24 hours then I took it out, wrapped it in a damp paper towel and kept it under a grow light. I checked it every couple days and once I saw roots, I put toothpicks in it, so it could rest on top of a jar of water. It now has a super long root and the top of the tree is poking out! It took a few months to get to this point, but it is worth the wait, because it is growing pretty fast now!
Good luck!

I've done both, tooth picks and wrapped in a towel in a plastic bag. Both rooted. Don't get discouraged if it takes a LONG time, keep at it.

Two ways I’ve found work for me:

1\. Throw the stone in the worm farm. Come back in a couple months and if it has roots and the seed has split to show a growing shoot, remove, wash off soil and stand in water until more extensive leaf and root development.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND OPTION ONE, EASY AND EFFECTIVE.

2\. Leave for a couple days, then gently peel off the outside layer with your fingernail. It should crack and flake off. Stand in warm to hot water for 48 hours (I used a thermos and refilled the water each day).
Remove and gently wrap in a layer of damp (not dripping) tissue or paper towel and place in clean snaplock bag with plenty of air. Make sure there is no dirt or avocado matter in there or it can go mouldy.
Leave in a cool dry place (like a pantry shelf) and wait about 2-3 months for the seed to crack with a growing shoot, then transfer to water as above.

Good luck!

Hi! How long did it take to get to this point/size? Also, has it only sat in the window or did it go under a grow light at all? Thanks in advance if you take the time to answer! I just put two avocado 🥑 seeds in the water tooth pick method. 🤞🏻

Mine took a few months to grow from a pit in water but it's a foot tall now with long roots in water

Honestly, the easiest and most successful way I’ve had is throw it in the worm farm! Forget about it and you’ll be so pleased a couple months later when you see it shooting up with a stem and roots. Pot immediately or put in water for a while if you choose. Source: many avocado plants. Just potted three beauties from the worm farm in the last week.
