# I’d like to learn from you about storing terracotta pots in the…

I’d like to learn from you about storing terracotta pots in the winter. Winters in New England are quite cold and I understand cracking can be an issue. While the best way to handle this is probably to relocate them to our basement, or even garage, I think that creates a new concern for my back cracking (far more painful than pots cracking). Is there any way to keep these outside and also protect them? Maybe storing them near the foundation, something involving a tarp, or hay, or something I clearly have not yet thought of? Is it better to dump the soil inside and store them empty, or keep the soil inside? Is it okay to stack them? Nest them? What haven’t I considered?
Oh my goodness, I’m so new to this and really don’t want to lose these pretty pots, and mostly my back.
Thoughts?

Personally I dump the soil and store in the shed or garage. I always have some holes from critters or drainage issues to fill so it's a win all around.

You’re confirming my thought on the dirt. Thx

Yes a shed or garage is best, especially if you want to keep the dirt in the pot. I find pots left out in the open crack or split in the winter due to rain/snow/cold temps expanding in the pot. The only success I’ve had with leaving them in the yard is to put them in a place where they will stay dry 100% of the time. I have even stored all the dirt from the pots in an old tote in my garage (used the wheelbarrow), so that I could nest them together to save space.

It might be time to buy a shed

Beautiful pot and plants! 🤩 Props to you for thinking ahead. When I moved to a colder climate a few years ago, my ignorant self didn't even know this would happen and I lost a lot of good pots 🥲 I don't have a solution other than others have mentioned above. It's such a hassle! 😭
