# Plant friends….. I need help. I got this peperomia 19 days ago. I…

Plant friends….. I need help. I got this peperomia 19 days ago. I have not watered it in 19 days because the soil has been wet since I got it. I don’t see yellow leaves or brown leaves. I don’t see pests. I see some new growth. But…. I don’t think soil should stay wet for 19 days! It’s been in EVERY window of my house and it thrives in all of them but the soil isn’t drying. So my only recourse I guess is…. What? Repot? I’m afraid I’m going to knock off every single leaf if I try to repot this thing. Or I could put a fan on it. Thoughts?!

I have one of these plants as well, and the soil in mine also stays wet I think as long as there are no signs of the plant suffering, I think that it should be fine. I like to water mine when I notice it is all the way dry and the leaves are drooping.

Ok. This is very positive info for me to have. It has never drooped in the 19 days I’ve had it. But I’m having to fight every neuron in my brain to just not water the thing. Thank you!

Peperomias, like succulents, tend to prefer their soil to “dried out” a bit before watering rather than being overwatered (they are very prone to root rot) hence why I LOVE them because they’re low maintenance. However, I wouldn’t worry about your peperomia too much because she seems to be very happy where she is! (for now - as long as she continues putting out new shoots, leaves, etc.)

I water my peperomias whenever the soil really dries out - about every two weeks - and keep them in a well draining pot. I recommend repotting her to a clear plastic nursery pot (clear pot is so u can keep an eye on her roots 😁) after her soil finally does dry to prevent potential water build up \& root rot in the future! :)

If the soil is peat-heavy or of miracle grow brand, then I agree that it probably is the soil causing the long drying out time. If the soil is Miracle Grow, that’s almost definitely why it isn’t drying out. I swear by Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix for mine. I’d gently remove the current soil, maybe not all of it unless it’s miracle grow, then remove most or all of it, check the roots for any rot, and if there is rot, cut the rotted roots and spray or soak the roots in hydrogen peroxide. If you’re worried about shock from the repotting, sprinkle a liberal amount of Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder onto the roots, then replace the soil with the cactus mix. Peperomias are epiphytic so it’s key that they have a well-draining soil to survive, which is why I opt for the cactus mix for better drainage without having to mix my own soil. If you can’t find Espoma, any other cactus mix that isn’t Miracle Grow brand should do. Hope this helps.

I bought it at a big box shop so no idea about the kind of medium. I’ve seen you say on other posts to avoid Miracle Grow so I’ve been avoiding that as I purchase other things.

Got it. I’ve found a lot of peperomias at box stores tend to be in more peat-heavy mixes, so if you can gently remove some of the outer layers of the soil without disturbing the roots too much, and don’t see any signs of distress on the root system, then you can just replace the outer layers of peat with a cactus mix or mix with orchid bark and perlite to improve the drainage.

Oh lort. I gotta pray about this. Lol
