# I live in Alaska where the humidity gets down to 25-30% in the…

I live in Alaska where the humidity gets down to 25-30% in the winter. My calatheas and alocasias almost didn’t make it. We also live in a fixer upper house that doesn’t perform like a well built house lol I have many spots where plants are congregated based on their light and humidity need. Several spots are my high humidity loving plants and in order for them to survive and hopefully thrive in winter I first did trays with rocks under each tropical plant and misting per Plantas schedule. That didn’t do anything for overall humidity in the immediate area. I have hygrometers in each spot and the percent didn’t change. I then went all out and added grow lights and humidifiers which added like 20% humidity in my tropical plant room being as how it’s a small room. But then we started finding mass amounts of mold all over the place :( and husband says I can’t have the humidifiers going anymore. We’ve done some research and came up with using 55 gallon fish tanks and having acrylic tops custom made to create a terrarium for them. All my plants are of course already potted and I want to keep them that way. I found one site online that said it’s just fine to put potted plants in an enclosed terrarium and not have to do anything other than monitor the humidity but I feel like it might be more complicated than that…
I’m looking for any help, insight, advice, experienced knowledge that anyone might have on keeping potted plants in glass aquariums. I really want to keep my tropical plants alive in Alaska lol I do realize that it just might not be feasible as long as we continue living in this house but I want to try everything I can first. Ssssooo please help me :p

Have you thought about getting a glass cabinet? Something like a Milsbo or Rudsta cabinet from IKEA? You could put grow lights and a small humidifier in it.

Here in central Canada the humidity goes to 10% in the winter and we have a similar house as you described. I have two big glass cabinets and in one is a small humidifier. Also grow lights in the cabinets. So the plants in my cabinets get 60-85% humidity without affecting the room humidity. It’s a bit to set up but worth it.

Where’d u get your cabinets? Just wondering if u found something other than ikea that I could see if they’ll ship here

Yes I got mine from Facebook marketplace. Someone is always selling something second hand you can transform. This is one of the ones I got.

Oh yes I looked at those glass cabinets from IKEA and I super want one! lol but they don’t ship to Alaska :( I’d buy one in a heart beat if I could. Other than that, I’m basically left to my own devices. Ty everyone who has responded so far!

I lived in Fairbanks for 5 years and know what you’re talking about. You’d always try to stay away from metal objects just because of static electricity buildup 🤣. I live in Georgia now, and just bought the ÅKERBÄR IKEA greenhouse in white. It’s not big, but it’s big enough for some plants, especially seed germination. Plus, you can mount a grow light and a heat bulb, with room for a heat pad and a humidifier at the bottom. You can get bigger greenhouses, but here in Georgia, 22.99 is a good deal for a greenhouse.
