# What is this stuff on the backs of these leaves? This is a new plant…

_Geplaatst door Lynda op 2025-03-28_

What is this stuff on the backs of these leaves? This is a new plant in the past two months, and it’s gone through three sprays of neem, and I use an insecticide in my water can. I was putting this plant on a small trellis, and felt something sticky. I looked for it, and couldn’t find where the stickiness came from; that’s when I noticed these marks on the backs of these leaves. Any ideas? TIA!

Looks like edema. The plant takes up too much water and the cells in the leaves lyse (burst).

I did water it yesterday; is this normal? What will happens to these leaves, and can I prevent this from happening if this is dangerous to the plant’s leaves?

Sorry, I couldn’t edit my post; Planta would not let me… 😤

This is probably edema, as you’ve already said, but how do I prevent it? I waited until the plant was dry according to my wood STAKE, so did I water it too much at one time? How do I prevent edema, and does it cause permanent damage to the leaves? TIA!

I’d do some research into possible causes that fit your set up. There are many reasons that plants may develop edema, so narrowing it down to a few of the most likely reasons will depend on a lot of factors (watering habits, amount of light, humidity, air circulation, to name a few). The leaves will not heal, but it won’t cause them to yellow or anything. They can still make energy for the plant as usual. You can just try and prevent it from developing further. I’ve never noticed a difference between the leaves that have it and those that don’t.

How often are you watering her?

#### Lynda antwoordde op 2025-03-29

I watered her 10 days ago, and according to the wooden stake I use, she was perfectly dry. Comments? TIA!
