I sometimes get this as well! I’m not sure what it is but I tend to scrape it off the top. It doesn’t seem done any damage as of yet though so I think it’s harmless but someone might know better than me

Ok so I looked it up and it says it can be from tap water that makes hard water practically on top of the soil

Oh that’s weird though because I used bottled water on some of the plants that got this. But maybe it was left over residue rising to the top from the store I bought it from.

If it’s regular bottled water it’s considered hard with all the added minerals. You can just give them a good watering to rinse all of the white off.

Oh really?? Goddamn I’m gonna have to buy a water filter. I live in London so I really dare not use the tap water on my plants 🤢

Chuck, I also live in London and have been using tap water for all of my plants. I try to leave it sitting uncovered for at least 24 hours but occasionally it’s straight out of the tap or hosepipe, especially on hot days.
I also have been adding banana skin water and nearly all of my plants are thriving.
I’m about 10 minutes away from Liverpool Street train station so I’m pretty central too.
Just wanted to let you know that with a little foresight you can use London’s water and get results.

If you have a dehumidifier you can also use the water from that as it is distilled. I'm near London and my flat gets so humid it's a good way to reuse water

Either mineral deposits or the start of white mold

Mine also does this with outside dirt, once I started using g potting soil it hasn't happened
