About grow lights
Hello all! So I got a couple grow lights from Amazon. They are full spectrum and have both timing and dimming options. idk how many hours, which brightness, or how close to my plants to them. I plan on putting my zygocactus (false Christmas cactus) and African violet under one and possibly my ruby ficus under another. The former are what I’m most concerned about, I’d like them to keep flowering, but have had to keep them on a cold window sill to get nearly enough light up until now (hence the grow light). Any advice on how to best use these in general and w/ my particular plants would be greatly appreciated!

Generally 12-16" is ideal... this will also depend on the plants needs and the lux. Red lights best for flowering and fruiting, but if it's full spectrum, it will have red as well. I have my lights on 12-16 hrs usually. You should harden plants off to lights, so they don't scorch... ie start at 4hrs than 6hrs, etc too build up tolerance.

Thank you! I will definitely work them up to it as you suggest!

Okay, what I was explaining about certain preset hours being tied to colors—that’s just wrong, lol—it’s simply full spectrum with different timing settings 🫠
Final question is about to dim or not to dim: it does have the option of 25-100%. Idk what to do there—maybe just feel it out (like if I know I’m trying to get them to bloom and/or it’s been particularly dark, set it brighter?).
Thanks again! I’m likely overthinking it! (I used to be a notorious plant-killer and have been doing so well—w/ the help of this app!—and don’t want to go back to my old ways!!)

Some of them do have different settings, for turning on or off certain spectrums. I personally wouldn't dim it for normal use. But, for instance, I went on vacation, didn't have a plant sitter so I dimmed the plant light to 50% because it was going to be on for 5 days.

Thanks so much! 💗

I have a false Christmas cactus under a full spectrum and it’s as happy as can be. They like full sun. I don’t know about the African Violet though as they like bright indirect light. If you put your violet under it I’d place it to the side maybe not directly under it and keep an eye on it.

Thank you! Right now, I have it set up exactly the other way around, lol! That’s what I’ll do for sure 👍🏼 One upside, then, I guess, is that the f. Christmas cactus sits a couple inches higher (at least) due to the pot, and is a lot taller; so it’ll inherently be a lot closer to the light than the violet. Anyway, thanks again 😊
