The previous owner of the plant probably cut another stem off. This might have been because the stem died and they were preserving energy.

Hmm I’m not sure. Looks like one of their tubers which is required to propagation.

If you take it out of the pot, that would be the only way to tell. If it’s a tuber there wouldn’t be as many roots attached to it
