Could you clarify what the issue is? Not sure what to be looking for…

The soil has that yellow patching on the top . I’ve never seen that

i believe this is a type of mold that thrives in humid soil. this type of mold is common and harmless to plants, but if you’re concerned about it you can break it up or replace the top layer of soil.

also, new roots that grow out of a monstera not in soil are completely normal! they’re called aerial roots and love to drape down and capture moisture from the air, as well as grip to surfaces around them! monsteras do this in the wild when they’re climbing up trees. just thought you’d wanna know that if you hadn’t before 🫶🫶

Thank you I didn’t think about the aerial roots 🤦🏽‍♀️. I’m just remove the top layer then cause that was the only reason added it

I didn’t know this! Very cool. Thanks for talking about their aerial roots. I learned something today. And no, I don’t have a Momstera. Not yet, anyway.

Def look it up it’s interesting

That looks like mineral buildup, which can happen from tap water or fertilizer over time.
If the runoff is dark when you water, that’s a good indicator.
Repot her with a chunky soil mix. While you can mix different soils, succulent + tropical mixes don’t pair well long term—they get dense and stay wet. Adding orchid bark and pumice will help with drainage and aeration.

It could possibly be yellow patch disease a fungus that thrives and cool wet conditions or xtra nitrogen or thatch try once you do get the new pot and add perlite a bacteria fighting mix and helps with aeration with good succulent ready soil.

Will do I have the mix , what if I mix tropical and succulent soil ?

#### SWDK replied on 2025-10-11

Yes, you can mix tropical soil and succulent soil, but it's important to understand the purpose of each and adjust the mixture accordingly to create a soil that works for your specific plant. Tropical soil retains more moisture, while succulent soil is designed to drain quickly, so mixing them creates a medium that can be more forgiving for either type of plant. Adding extra perlite or sand to the mixture will improve drainage for plants that require it, while adding more organic material will help retain moisture for those that need it.
