Anyone have any tips for preparing indoor plants for the colder months, specifically ones that usually reside in windowsills? I live in PA so I just wanna make sure I’m properly prepping everyone before it’s actually chilly around here 🥶

My windowsill props do fine in the winter. NE Iowa. I’ve noticed that with the sun being lower in the sky I actually get more intense light in my S \& E windows in the winter.

I don’t do this because it doesn’t get that cold where I live. but I grew up in Montana and my mom used to put Saran Wrap to seal windows (old leaky house/windows)

I might have to try that! Thank you! ☺️ the windows aren’t drafty as far as I know, but my concern is that the windowsill does still feel fairly cold in the winter, so I’m debating over if I should move them from the windowsill or not, particularly my peperomias and jade plants.

I’m not sure how well it actually insulates vs if you just have air leaks. I always thought she was crazy but it really kept the air out! I think they sell little kits at hardware stores too.

You could always try a heat mat if you’re really worried!

It depends on the plants. I think the biggest concern for me would be plants with thin leaves that will suffer if the temperature drops below 55 in their area. Usually, the difficulty is less the air temperature and more the root temperature, so cachepots would actually help your plants survive a slight chill. But others might actually benefit. Many orchids take a dip in temperature as a signal to flower!

The ones in the windowsills are jade plants, peperomia (obtusifolia, clusiifolia, polybotrya, and argyreia), three ficus elasticas, a sedum morganianum, and a trailing jade (kleinia petraea/senecio jacobsenii), so it’s a little mixed bag in terms of leaf thickness. The peperomia are new to my home, as well as the ficuses, whereas I know my jades prefer getting pulled back from the windowsill and getting a table to themselves within a foot of the windowsill, so I’m not sure how the rest will react to the PA winters 🥶.
