# My Flamingo Lily appears to be very healthy and happy, and even has…

_Geplaatst door Lynda op 2025-09-09_

My Flamingo Lily appears to be very healthy and happy, and even has some blooms, however, I just noticed these funny looking bumps on a couple of the leaves. They feel sort of like braille to me… very bumpy to the touch. This seems like a red flag to me, but I have no idea what it might be, or how I would treat it if it were something. Any ideas? TIA!

Your flamingo lily (anthurium) likely has bumps due to either scale insects or a physiological issue called edema. Bumps can also be new aerial roots, which are a sign of a healthy plant. The exact cause depends on the appearance and location of the bumps. Lmk what you think.

Hmmmmm… it’s interesting that you brought up scale. Within about three feet of my Anthurium, I have a ficus that has scale, but not severely. I treated it with Bonide’s systemic houseplant insect control, which is the only thing I know that can eliminate scale from my ficus plants. However, the scale on a ficus plant appears quite different. You likely know that it’s a round, circular spot much larger than these spots that are planted on the surface of the leaf. Unlike the bumps I can feel on my plant, these spots are not something you can touch.

In continuation, these bumps are on the leaf itself, so I don’t think they would be new aerial roots. And I just noticed that when I touch the two spots on this particular leaf, one area has the bumps pointing towards the back of the leaf, and the other affected area has the bumps facing towards the front of the leaf. Peculiar, huh? I haven’t seen scale on plants other than my ficus plants, so I don’t know if scale is different on other plants or not. Maybe you might have an idea about that. TIA!

Scale Insects Midges (Biting Midges/No-See-Ums)
Feeding Feed on plant sap by piercing plant tissue with needle-like mouthparts. Primarily bite animals and humans, not plants, leaving irritating welts. Some types feed on aquatic algae.
Mobility Mostly immobile as adults, resembling barnacles. Only the "crawler" stage moves freely. Mobile insects with wings that swarm in large numbers.
Damage Weakens or kills plants by feeding on sap. Causes yellowing leaves, dieback, and sooty mold from honeydew. Cause irritating bites and welts on animals and humans. Some species can transmit diseases to non-human animals.
Appearance Appear as small, shell-like bumps on stems or leaves. Small, gnat-like flying insects, often forming large swarms.

I would love to hear the answer to that as well, I have the same on mine

Can you take a picture of your plants bumps…LOL, so we can see what your plant’s bumps look like? Maybe it would help somebody diagnose our bumpy plants. TIA!

Hmmmmm, I think this looks the same as what I’ve seen on my anthurium. What do you think?

Anthurium gall. You might have midges. This answer was hard to find. But, the bumps on the underside in a row with the damaged top looks like yours. This is new to me. Thanks for posting. 🪴🍀

This is very helpful thank you! I’m not at home to take a picture right now, but I do feel as if it was just one leaf affected with no obvious pest or other damage, and all the newer leaves since have been unaffected

Thanks a mil’… I really appreciate your detective work! Did you get this info from your local county extension service? If so, I’ll have to see if I can do the same with ours. I know nothing about midges, and will have to do some investigating on my own. Off the top of your head, any tips? Like, are these bugs easily transmissible, etc.?
TIA!

#### Sunny antwoordde op 2025-09-10

I got this through a Google search. Then, down a rabbit hole that lead to a link in Reddit to the Minnesota Extension service forum. County and state extension services are staffed by very knowledgeable people. I’m in Texas. Not my county. I know nothing about midges except they bite people too. Try reaching out via their website if you have questions. 🪴🍀

Its scale just affects the plants a bit differently depending on type of plant it is. Midges do not usually eat plants as stated here. So just use the same spray or healing process for both plants and watch them closely.

TXS for your info RE scale. However, I’m just a bit confused… are you saying you think this is definitely scale, or not? And if it is, should I use neem, or Bonide? TIA!

#### SWDK antwoordde op 2025-09-09

Its scale more than anything I was showing it was not midges because they don’t like plants. Also the scale transferred basically from your other plant. It’s hard for a random insect to just all of a sudden jump on your plant. It came from your affected plant. And you can use neem oil on both in my best opinion.

#### Sunny antwoordde op 2025-09-10

Migrants damage plants are real. See the pic.

I saw no evidence of scale on the leaves. They stick around and eat the sap while reproducing more scale insects. Treat with neem oil. Don’t leave the plant in full sun to avoid hot spots from the sun’s rays being magnified through term oil droplets.

I believe it’s natural during leaf formation. One of mine has a couple leaves similar

How long has your plant had those bumpy spots, and did you use any kind of pesticide? I wonder if this is something particular to our anthuriums? I’ve already given mine a good spray of neem, hoping that if this is a pest, I’ll catch it before it does any more damage to her other leaves. TXS for joining in on the fun… 🙄!

Hi. I added her to my plants on Feb. 25, 2023. She went straight into Leca and has had off shoots taken multiple times.

I’ve also kept seeing this in research.. Especially wit these types of plants.

If you can try to get magnification for pest identification. I have this one. It connects to an app on my phone. It’s like being in 6th grade science using the microscope 🤣
