# Hi! So I lost my mind on Sunday and decided for the first time I'm…

Hi! So I lost my mind on Sunday and decided for the first time I'm going to have plants. And in true me fashion, I didn't just purchase one or two of the same kind. I went wild and bought myself a golden pothos, a spider plant, a snake plant, a money tree (it was on clearance and I have no control), an aloe, and a jade.

Everybody is currently living right next to my east facing sliding glass door. I repotted the spider plant right away because her roots were coming out of the nursery pot. But everybody else is still hanging out in their original houses waiting to be repotted in some super cute pots (with holes!)

I know most of the ones I got don't mind a little neglect and as the greenhouse lady said "are virtually indestructible" but please give me any tips and tricks I should know for those plants!

Congratulations on becoming a plant mom. The one I have a question about is the tall guy in back. That definitely is not a money tree but I'm not quite sure exactly what it is. Have you tried Google camera to identify it? Or if possible, a better pic here. I am intrigued. I hope I get to find out what it is. I don't think me personally, have ever come across this beautiful creature.

I should have specified! Aloe and money tree not pictured! That's the jade plant!

Okay I googled. I know, my doctor says not to Google. I feel stupid. Is the plant in back your jade plant? Which would make sense to everybody but me. I had a jade a while back and it and the snake plant don't need a lot of water. My snakes I have now I water every 2 - 3 weeks. The same goes for the jade plant. My money plant grows best when he's away from sun. In fact, I moved mine to a shadier spot because the little sun it got before turned the leaves yellow. Hope some of this helps and sorry for the double post.

That jade plant is so pretty!! I’m very jealous. Be prepared for pests… they’re always there.. and lurking… let the soil dry out for the snake and jade plant or stick your finger in it to see how dry it is then water.

It's a good idea you're going to wait for a bit to repot the others. My suggestion would be to repot them in clear plastic pots so you can see their roots and just drop them into decorative pots that you can take them in and out of when needed.

💯 this! Clear nursery pots are the best. Great for knowing when to water.

Welcome! I hope you enjoy your new plant babies.

My general rule of thumb if you have a problem with a plant would be, “more light, less water.” (Unless you live in a place with intense, blazing hot sun, then reverse it, lol 🙃)

Great job picking beginner-friendly plants! I will echo the comments about waiting to repot - let your plants adjust to their new homes first, because moving plants and repotting them both causes stress!

Definitely also want to second the comment(s) about waiting until the soil is dry before you water. A lot of new (or not-new lol!) plant owners get excited and want to take care of their plants, and totally overwater them.

Also great decision to download Planta, but BEWARE - it doesn’t get the watering schedule totally right! Planta doesn’t know how much you water your plants or whether you’ve left them with water under the pot (this is a faux pas), the humidity levels, etc. Use the app’s schedule as a prompt to check the dryness of your plants’ soil, and to monitor the health and growth of your plants.

Good luck and have fun! Enjoy your new hobby!

the planta schedule definitely loves to overwater. take it as a suggestion, not an actual calendar. check the soil before watering. use a wooden skewer and stick it roughly two inches into the soil. if anything sticks to the skewer, click snooze. you can use your finger, too, which might be easier for you to tell. if it feels like it'll be bone dry tomorrow morning, water it. for the succulents though, they should be dry all the way through before you water, so i recommend the skewer for that test lol
