This post was meant for the Lithops group, but I’m putting it here to create, um, Lithops awareness? Basically, this is a plant almost everyone kills due to the watering schedule + waiting + trust. This is only my second winter with them, and they’re once again a total shock. It’s winter here, but currently a thousand degrees in S.Africa, so all my plants from that area are doing stuff. Anything that looks plump only recently came home with me. Anything crusty is an established plant that has gone through a year of me moving it between a full sun spot and a grow light powerful enough to crisp their tops. The result of the latter is, maybe, I’m getting some funky stuff such as two Lithops appearing in a single plant. One of the images shows the plant I started to dissect when I thought it was a goner. No, no, something definitely growing in there. Image of what they look like in their habitat. Have I mentioned that I postulate that Lithops influenced the director (Johannesburg native Neill Blomkamp) of District 9 and Chappie? I want to talk to him about all the sucs he saw as a kid and determine if I’m wrong :) ### Mullein kommentierte am 2024-02-25 I just lost my first lithop 😮‍💨 I’m not sure exactly what happened, but its sudden decline seemed to line up with my humidifier going on the fritz and cranking the room from 45% to 75% all day before I found out I almost got a replacement yesterday. It was a very cute double, but the soil was quite wet from the employees watering them 😭 I didn’t want to buy it if it was just going to melt in few days from that #### Dave\_opuntiaface antwortete am 2024-02-26 Oh man, I’m so sorry. I hear ya! I kept seeing Lithops this season and walking by due to kind of dialing in what the ones I have need. I broke that rule, of course. For reals, it had to be the humidifier. But it’s crazy how unforgiving these guys are despite a year of quality care. It’s the “what have you done for me lately!?” species. I’ll put this here just because, but I’m trying to formulate some plans to do 3D models of weird sucs, especially Lithops and the split faces. Just everything that’s neat to look at but too big of a pain or mystery to grow. That’s so cool! I actually just started learning how to model last year. I’m taking classes for video game animation. I don’t know exactly what my new career path with be yet, but if anyone needs a realistic plant design specialist I could do that! 😂 That’s such a great idea modeling plants that are too fussy or rare to own. I’m also a painter, so I keep telling myself I should just make myself painting of the super fancy variegated tropical plants that I can’t afford 🤣 #### Dave\_opuntiaface antwortete am 2024-02-29 Yeah, for printing. I get these ideas that don’t have an audience in mind, but this was one that stuck. However, it needs something like Miley Cyrus to have a cactus on a table in her new vid, and then someone tells her it would be cool to sell replicas of HER plant. And then celebrities come out of nowhere with “hey, I didn’t know all these people like cactus,” and now we have a model of Taylor Swift’s aloe. Etc. Realistically, I should take some animation (or go head down on some music software) classes, as well haha. I spent three days last year telling people “I’m going to look into A.I. because there is some artistry there…” No, it’s all deep programming languages. Meanwhile, I keep drawing these shapes like they’re graffiti tags. I also sometimes find things in the digital field that are like “oh that would be so cool to learn how to do! … Oh. Coding 😳” I wish my brain worked that the way programmers’ brains do, it really is something else, but it is not my first nature at all lol. My brother is learning though, so maybe we’ll be the next creative sibling super-duo 😂 You’re so right about random trends blowing up from little details in celebrities’ lives. We need to fabricate a headline about Taylor Swift flying in her private jet to see her favorite cactus lol. I personally don’t get the celebrity hype, but it certainly helps some things sell like hot cakes! #### Dave\_opuntiaface antwortete am 2024-03-04 I worked as a music/culture journalist in the 2000s where I spent my life framing nobodies into celebrities. And then something would happen, such as interviewing Beastie Boys in an igloo (at Sundance) with international press, and I would feel that strange, class-based weirdness of awe. However, that is a band I studied and has been in my heart since 1985. They are icons (yes, I know that it’s kind of troubling to call License to Ill a fav record in 2024), not someone served to me by every social media platform as “here’s the most popular artist on the planet, and we want a reaction from 8 billion people.” I’m also constantly testing myself whether I’m acting like my grandparents over The Beatles when popular music changes its entire ensemble, but I find merit in a lot of mumble rap. I’m still relevant lol. Here’s how far the idea is. I learned that the junk you feed 3D printers is called filament. I found some that has 30% wood fiber, started to look up if that requires anything special until distraction. I asked my girlfriend about the fiber, got no answer.
