# Hi all! I got these 2 Jade plants off marketplace for $10 the other…

Hi all!

I got these 2 Jade plants off marketplace for $10 the other day. I’ve never owned any of these guys before so any tips and tricks would be much appreciated!
They are currently potted in a decorative pot, which I usually like to plant in a nursery pot. Should I repot them or just leave them be? One seems to be in pretty good soil but the one with the red tinge to the leaves has rock solid soil and quite damp. They are living outside, undercover but it is winter here at the moment, are they pretty cold tolerant or should I bring them in? (Temps ranging from 5 degrees to -5 degrees C at night)
Thank you!

I would definitely bring it inside at night, 10 degrees C is probably the coldest they like.

I would repot the one in the damp soil. If you want to move them to nursery pots they won’t mind. I keep mine in plastic. The one with the red leaves id just remove any of them that are looking especially sad. The other one you might want to wait to repot so it can acclimate a bit but they’re pretty easy going as long as you aren’t watering all the time.

If you have any other cacti or succulents, care will be very similar. I water when the leaves start looking a little wrinkly. I fertilize a very dilute mixture with every watering. Mine is in the brightest spot in my house. They can tolerate full sun but I’d gradually transition if you don’t know where they were at the last home.

Completely agree with Kades’ response here. I’d opt for repotting them in a plastic pot with plenty of drainage holes. It’ll make it easier to water and repot them in the long run. I like Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix for my jades. Please avoid Miracle Grow’s soil for this type of plant, even their cactus mix. It isn’t well-draining enough. Go for a well-draining cactus mix for the jade, and if you’re removing a lot of the previous soil, check the roots for any signs of distress or rot, treat any rot with some shears and a soak in hydrogen peroxide for 20-30 minutes, then add some Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder to the roots to help the plant develop new roots faster and reduce the risk of shock from repotting, especially if they’ve been outside in the colder temps for a while. I’d definitely bring them inside for the season. For the jade in the moist soil, you might want to wait a week for it to acclimate to the room temperature of your house after bringing it inside before repotting it, since it’s more likely of going through shock by being repotted right after being exposed to colder temps. Hope this helps!

That’s a very good price for plants that size and in good condition.

\- They like being more snug in their pots, and even get a little root-bound. Don’t repot it in any pot more than 1-2 inches in diameter to the width of the plant’s root ball. They need to either be in a terra cotta pot with at least one large drainage hole, or a plastic pot with multiple drainage holes. Avoid glazed ceramic pots for these as they will hold too much moisture that this plant cannot handle.
\- Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings. I wait at least 15-18 days before watering in the spring/summer and at least 20-22 days in the fall/winter before watering. In the cooler months, you might find it takes closer to 25-27, especially given the size of your jades. This plant enjoys being bone dry before watering
\- Try to keep the leaves dry during waterings. Placing the plant in a bowl/container with water for 10-20 minutes, then resting it to dry is a great way to water it without getting the leaves wet.
\- Jades enjoy full-sun, or at least 6-8 hours of sunlight every day, so place it somewhere bright with consistent sun and it should be happy.
\- Best kept at 59-86 degrees in summer, 54-77 degrees in winter. Lowest temp survivable is 41 degrees.
\- Common problems are yellow (too much/too little sun)/shriveled leaves (underwatered), spindly growth/stretching (to little sun), white spots (excess salts, powdery mildew, or mealybugs), and root rot (overwatering).
\- Watch for mealy bugs. Treat with isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip. Don’t let alcohol touch the soil.
\- Use a baking soda and vinegar solution for powdery mildew. Wipe leaves with a wet cloth for excess salts.
\- You can use a wooden skewer to test if the soil is dry enough to water. If the stick comes out clean, it’s safe to water. If the soil sticks to it, wait at least 2 days, then test it again.
\- Toxic to pets if eaten.
