Can I underplant a monstera?

Hello! My coworker brought in this awesome Thai con for our work plant stand. He wants to plant it in the pictured large grey pot. This pot is way too big for this monstera, so I was wondering if I could underplant it to take up the extra space (and water). I’m thinking pothos, open to other suggestions.

I know monstera put out a hormone to discourage other plants from growing near them. I was wondering if anyone had tried a monstera mixed pot, and if so, did it last? I want to make my coworker happy, but I don’t want to kill plants in the process. 😄

Thanks for your help!

Thai cons are prone to root rot when they are juvenile so I wouldn't. If they are stuck on the look of the pot then they can repot the Thai con in something only 1-2 inches bigger and place that inside the bigger pot with like a double pot situation. I would still be concerned about adequate airflow though and it still getting root rot if you do this. Best suggestion is to just keep the pot for when it gets bigger.

Completely agree with Katomarose on this. And if your coworker is new to houseplants, I probably wouldn’t keep it in that self-watering pot. I agree that the larger pot can be one for it to grow into later on, but a (non self-watering) plastic pot with plenty of drainage holes is probably best to lower the risk of overwatering it.
