# I just received this Easter cactus (similar to Christmas/thanksgiving…

_Geplaatst door Aspiringplantmom op 2025-12-06_

I just received this Easter cactus (similar to Christmas/thanksgiving cactus) in the mail. The bottom portion has a white/matte coloration to it, I’m wondering if anyone knows what this is? I have not watered or repotted since receiving it, thought I plan to repot soon. It’s not mushy or has any odor that makes me think it is rot. Could this just be a natural coloration for the plant? In addition to this, I plan to repot because I see some roots coming through the bottom. I bought this plant as a gift for my mother and would like to make it look prettier for gifting. Does anyone have any advice for how it likes to be repotted and cared for till I can gift?

The bottom part being whitish and hard is normal. This is the corking process -basically like trunk formation. Medium bright light. Tropical type soil with added drainage. Planta advice works well for watering

the bottom leaves are hardening to support the leaves that shoot off of it. common for holiday cacti and the like. it's so that the weight of the leaves does not make them break
