# I’d love some advice about repotting my ZZ Plant. She is a favorite…

I’d love some advice about repotting my ZZ Plant. She is a favorite and absolutely thriving. She is starting to get root bound I think. I keep seeing the roots encircling and getting tangled from the bottom, the root are at the top soil being exposed, plus, there’s a bulging out section from roots. I included it in the photo but it is likely hard to see, but incredibly easy to feel because it’s hard as a rock. I have seen many ZZ Plants have transplant shock/die after replanting and I’m terrified to lose her. How do I replant? What type of soil? I’m running to the nursery today so I can pick up whatever is needed.

I put mine in succulent soil so it dries out the way it needs to. They’re easy to repot too! You should get another pot 1-2 inches bigger. The roots on my raven were so thick I had to progressively go up to a 14-inch pot.

I repotted mine in a potting mix and added perlite. It is doing great! I read that they like to be snug so I only went up to the next sized pot.

They love to be tight in the pot so it might not need to be repotted. I would take out and make sure

You have to remove the pot completely to check the roots. Don’t rely on the roots sticking out. They could just be roots taking advantage of excess water under the pot and not an indication of a root bound condition. Also, ZZ plants have bulbous roots. Bulges are common in plastic pots.
