# My boyfriend just got a spider plant from someone, we don’t know what…

_Gepostet von lina am 2025-09-07_

My boyfriend just got a spider plant from someone, we don’t know what the soil or root system is like but it looked good when he got it! He has watered it once and it is about 4 meters from a bright window, but it is suddenly half the leaves are wilting quite a bit, and feel very flimsy…any suggestions or ideas about what might be happening would be greatly appreciated!!

Could be overwatering mixed with not enough light? Are there drainage holes on the bottom? Those types of pots tend to only have one, which isn’t usually enough if you pour a lot through. (If you have enough drainage then overwatering is more about how often you water and less about the volume)

I would move it closer to the window and use a different pot with more drainage. You could use this one as a decorative pot/holder that the actual pot sits in.

If you do this ^ check for and cut off any root rot. You can spray the roots with diluted hydrogen peroxide to help deter any further rot. Wouldn’t hurt to also add additional amendments to the soil to keep it airy (perlite, pumice, bark, etc)

A good bromeliad mix soil is my go to when I don’t feel like mixing up a batch of soil or I’m in a pinch…. Definitely agree with what’s been said… looks like a water issue. Check the roots. Repot with a well draining soil mix. Treat any issues you find and please put it in a cache pot for drainage if you want to use that pot. Garden stores sell them for pennies on the dollar…

Spider plants will grow easily in an average house plant soil. Nothing special is needed. It would definitely check the drainage in the pot and planted higher up in the pot. A single cutting only needs a three or four inch pot to get going good. I think you can still rescue this one.

Placing it 4 meters from a window is putting it in darkness. They like bright indirect light. They can take direct morning sunlight in an east window once acclimated to the new location. Add a grow light within 1ft of the plant and running 12 hours a day, if needed. 🪴🍀
