# My heartleaf philodendron is about 7 years old. I repotted it into a…

My heartleaf philodendron is about 7 years old. I repotted it into a slightly larger pot with drainage 8 days ago because it was in a pot with no drainage. Before repotting, it had growth on all vines and was on its own crawling up the wall (see first picture). I repotted, watered it, and placed it in the same spot where it gets bright indirect light. After I repotted it, two vines from the same root began to wilt. I assumed that it was due to the stress of the repotting and did not water right away. I watered today (8 days later) hoping the wilted leaves would bounce back. They haven’t (see second and third pictures). Should I remove these vines? Is there any way to save them by propagating in water and then replanting once new roots have grown? I was trying to help this lady by repotting and I’m afraid I’ve hurt her more than helped. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Was it root bound when you repotted it? If no, I’d say that pot looks too big for the size of the plant.

What is your watering schedule? Do you wait until it’s all the way dry? Does that pot have drainage?

I don’t have this particular philodendron but I have several other types. I let them dry all the way out before watering again.

It wasn’t root bound, but the roots had taken up much of the pot. You can see the size of the original pot in the first picture and the new pot is not much larger. Should I repot to a smaller pot? Would that add too much stress? The new pot has drainage that’s why I repotted it.

I let the soil dry out before watering and I waited until it was mostly dried out before the repotting so as to not over water it.

The rest of the plant seems to be doing well it’s just those two vines that are struggling.

Thanks!

I don’t think you should repot right now. That’s definitely too much stress. Does it get enough light?

It’s next to a northeast facing window and about 6 feet from a south east window. The entire room is fairly bright. It’s in the same spot I’ve had it for years and I’ve never had an issue with the light. I have a grow light I can place over it if you think that would help?

Well, it sounds like it definitely needed to be repotted if it didn’t have drainage. I agree that it looks like the original pot in the first picture was possibly too large for that plant. I would have repotted it into a smaller pot after assessing the roots for rot and removing any rotten roots. I’d say it’s just in shock and will take some time to bounce back. Just make sure you don’t over water it. They do like to get pretty dry between waterings. If leaves start to turn yellow that indicates overwatering.

if it’s only been 8 days, the repot may still be shocking. (it also, may have been too soon to rewater) but take a break, talk to it so it can get acclimated!

Hi! I agree with other commenters, maybe give it some time, but I’ve had a single vine go weirdly limp like that, a couple times, each time I’ve pruned the vine and put it in water to root and it’s come back, eventually I repotted the plant with the extra vine and it grew normally again. I’m no pro but maybe try it? Good luck with your plants!
