I have this tall one and it’s been unstable and it has grown all the way to the ceiling. What can I do with her?

Yes her pot is so small and she is currently bound to the rack next to her but I would love to move her out of the corner.

Cutting the stem, propagating the top, and potting into the same pot is an option! I’m currently trying to save a >30 year old dracaena that seems to have had root rot for several years for someone. The best I could do was to cut and propagate to avoid rotting tissue unfortunately, but it is finally growing new roots and showing no signs of rot!

If you do go this route, know that it takes several weeks to grow roots and the first roots may look a bit like fungus when they first initiate. You can see some baby roots and how they look when they first start in this picture

When you trimmed the top of your Dracaena, did you root it in water for a while, or did you just put it into soil immediately? TIA!

How far would you cut it down? I’ve had this one for two years and my friend had it for a long time before

I’ve been rooting it in tap water with an aquarium bubbler to provide oxygen for over a month now and this is all the progress I have to show. I’m not sure if it’s been slow because it’s a dracaena or because this particular dracaena was so sick.

It really depends on what you want. Cutting off the main meristem (plant stem cell tissue) pushes the plant to make new shoots, so it will have more heads after it recovers from this. Just keep in mind that wherever you cut the stalk, new shoots will grow near the top of the stem that’s still in the soil.

If it were me, I’d cut it pretty aggressively since it’s reached the ceiling. I’d probably cut about 1-2 ft up from the soil and then cut the top into about 1 ft segments to propagate individually. Each of these cuttings could become a new plant with care and time. I want you to be aware that this involves accepting some risk that it could go wrong though. Pay close attention to the top and bottom cuttings in particular because they will be the most likely to succeed. The rest of the cuttings would be a nice to have, but if they all survive you can pot as many as you like together once they are rooted.
