# Hey guys, I bought a few plants the other day and just noticed that…

_Gepostet von Kayde am 2024-07-22_

Hey guys, I bought a few plants the other day and just noticed that the roots are very much coming through the bottom of the plants, I have 2 questions:

1\. Is it time to repot or will they be okay? As I’d rather not repot as I don’t have bigger pots rn.

2\. Are the roots rotting on the first pic? They’re a lot darker and black compared to the others or any other roots I’ve seen but the plant in question looks healthy? (Attached the plant)

Tia:)

I’d definitely repot the one on the left, or at the very least change the soil to add some more perlite or something. It looks very wet, and could be rotting soon if it isn’t already. Good news is you have some nice white roots there too.

The gray pot looks like they’ll be busting out of the pot soon. If you can’t get bigger pots just yet, you may be able to just chop the roots down, depending on what plant that is.

Google “root pruning” and then whatever plant that is to see if it’s a good candidate.

It may look wet as I only watered it this morning (I bought it 3 days ago and left it without water so it could adjust) but I think I will definitely repot into better soil, I’m not even quite sure what it’s potted in rn as it seems too fine to be soil.. I will have a google and see what I can do, thanks:)

I managed to find a spare pot that’s an inch wider for the plant on the right, so ima repot that with fresh soil tomorrow, but will have to make do with the same pot for the left plant… should I cut off the black looking roots and just keep the white healthy looking ones since I’ll be repotting into the same pot?

I would check the whole plant and just cause you see roots at the bottom does not mean it needs to be repotted and then roots that are darker does not mean that root rot but I would check

Yes some of the roots are rotting on the one in the orange pot. If roots are super soft and mushy, they’re rotten

How do I go about treating that?

Cut off any mushy roots. Rinse the rest of the root system off, then soak in 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 5 parts water for about 15 minutes.

Let the root system dry out for at least an hour. I’ve let plants dry for 5 hours before when treating root rot because the roots were soaking wet. You want the roots to still be slightly moist but not super wet.

Then clean your pot with hot soapy water before putting the plant back in. Plant it in fresh soil. Might want to mix in some perlite for better aeration

Agreed with Crystal on both pots. What you’ll look for when deciding to repot (due to the plant outgrowing the pot) is when you pull the plant out the roots occupy a good 70-80% of the space. The youtube channel Kill This Plant has a recent video explaining this that is very helpful. Here you can see with my ZZ plant that it was time for a repot:

I’m going to take them out today and see what’s what, I repotted my angel wings a few days ago and the roots looked insanee so it wouldn’t surprise me if these two are the same as I bought them on the same day🤣
