hey guys!! i recently got my first plant and it’s a diffenbachia camilla (dumb cane) i believe?? this is my first time handling any kind of plant. i bought it from a shop that was by me and i have no clue what i’m doing, i’ve done a lot of research. was just coming to see if anybody could tell me if i’m doing okay so far? i’m not sure what the plant is supposed to look like and i haven’t had it for long!! i’m seeing a couple of brown spots and yellowing leaves.

These actually have a really dark history that you might not know about. They were used to terrorize people and harm and hurt them. They were used to torment slaves that they marked as “unruly” whatever that’s supposed to mean- to inhibit their speaking and harm them. So, in the leaves of these plants is a chemical called Calcium Oxalate, and in them is a raffide; so what they would do is take the leaves, crack it and rub the juices on their tongues and in the worst cases, making them chew on the leaves. Which would cause them to become speechless, their tongues would swell, It would burn their throat and in some cases, children would suffer really bad. These plants single handedly inhibited people’s ability to speak, hence the awful name “dumb cane”. I don’t know anything about the care for for them but good luck!

i am an avid researcher so i actually did know this, just found out too late. super ironic first plant!
