We have 2 sick large aloe plants. Much too large for window sill. I have plant light on them. Diseased leaves were removed and both were repotted. Thoughts?

Sounds like you’ve done the right thing! Just make sure the pots you used are the right size for the root system (no more than 1-2 inches bigger, probably closer to 1 inch for aloes) and that they’re in a super well-draining soil mixture. Don’t just water when Planta tells you to or they’ll likely get overwatered. To make sure mine is ready to be watered, I like to stick a toothpick or wooden skewer all the way down into the soil, leave it there for 1-5 minutes, and then make sure it’s 100% clean and dry when I take it back out. If there’s any moisture or soil clinging to it, it’s not ready to be watered yet.

I also always like to check that my plants are actually receiving enough light from the grow lights; you can do this with a free light meter app on your phone if you don’t want to purchase a light meter. Just download the app, follow the instructions for measuring, and then measure how much light actually hits the leaves in foot candles. Ideally, aloes want 1000 foot candles or more, but that can be hard to achieve with cheaper grow lights, so I’d say if they’re getting at least 500 that will still be enough for them to grow slowly. Just make sure they’re getting 12-16 hours of light each day from the grow lights and they should be good!

Thanks so much

Be careful not to get water trapped where the leaves meet; it can stagnate and cause rot
